Understanding speed????

Though I would join the rest of disgruntled virgin customers who dont get the correct speed!!!!!! I am on the XL package which has 20mb broadband.
I have installed the tester which virgin advises Broadbandchoices.. and have over tha pasr 3 months have average speeds of no more than 8.7mb/s . Have contacted the technical service on several occassions to ask if i can get the speed that i'm paying for I have optimised the computer and replaced the modem but to no avail Yesterday i spent 20 mins with a so called expert who told me that running in safe mode would give me a better speed !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I went along with him as we put comp into safe mode and when the speed was 7.4 mb/s he told me " YOU NOW GETTING GOOD SPEED AND RUNG OFF" what kind of bloody service is that!!!! I phoned virgin and spoke to anyone who would listen and waht was i told "WE HAVE NO SAY WHAT THE TECHNICAL DEPT DOES AND ONLY THEY CAN HELP WITH BROADBAND Just to finish of my rant can anyone tell me if the speed test is accurate?? Also i read in another thread that the only way to get the speed increased was to use an AMBIT 255 modem any help on these questions would be greatly appreciated

Click on

save them anywhere on your computer dosn't matter.

Leave it a min or so.

And if your useing Ineternet explorer you should get a box that look like this:

Post back what it says in Transfer Rate of both downloads. i.e: 1.72MB/Sec once you've done this you can cancel the downloads.

Remeber though its peak time now so you may not get the top speed but you could give it a try. otherwise try at night or during the day.

And just to prove how rubbish and unreliable online speed tests are, heres a speed test I've just done using Broadband Choices. As you can see. a big difference to what I was getting a few mins ago.

PS. Can someone tell me what what 1.72MB is in Mb's please I'm never too sure but would say at a guess around 17Mb

I ran each individally and got speeds of
1.25mb/s and 0.99mb/s
I then ran both at once and got the following
1.02mb/s and 431kb/s

I'd say thats running at around 14Mb but as I said I'm not to sure on the conversion between MB and Mb, But I'm sure someone will confirm.

14Mb isn't that bad of a speed for this time of day. I'd try it again later on tonight or tommorrow. and see if it improves.

please check your results are they 1.25mb/s or 1.25MB/s i believe they are the latter so you have a download speed of 14MB which for the time of day is about right

1.02MB/S and 805KB/S

Looks like your seeing around 60% of full speed, this however is normall for peak times

Conversion rate is simply multiply by 8.

So, 1020kbps + 805kbps = 1825kbps.

1825 * 8 = 14,600. Which is 14.6Mb.

1MB = 1024KB
1KB = 8kb
1.02MB = 1044.48KB
1044.48KB + 805KB = 1849.48KB
1849.48KB = 1.81MB
1.81MB = 14.44mb

Also, don't count on the measurements given by the download dialogue of IE, it is an average value of the last several minutes and normally starts with very high values. You should really wait for a while, till you get a stable speed, or use some other software, I personally recommend DU meter.

I'm perfectly aware of that mate, just used the easy way to make things easier to understand
