Feral youths and street crime..

Just pinched some rest time to tell of an experience i had the other day.

I was at work and doing a job in a street over in the Didsbury area, not far from Chrities hospital. For those who know it it is one of the leavier suburbs of Manchester. Anyway,i was on foot walking down a fiarly busy (traffic wise) road,it was just before lunch,a fairly bright day. I became aware of some noise behind me and glancing over my left shoulder i saw coming up,maybe 40 feet behind me on the other side of the road, two tatty looking youths, both on bmx type bikes. I'm guessing they were about 14 and should really have been at school (or borstal if we still had' em). Anyway i was wary of them as there were very few pedestrians and i prepared to defend. They rode on past me and a few feet further on,one says to the other "lets get him, he's got his phone out". They then pulled scarves up to cover their mouths and one of them seemed to be reaching into his jacket for something. Looking ahead, i saw a young guy, smartly dressed, probably a student on his way to uni, with a phone clamped to his ear and oblivious to his surroundings.

I held back and watched, determind to intervene if they attacked.

Fortunately something put them off, they bottled it or changed their mind but they rode on.

But the fact that an attack didnt occur is not the main issue. Fact is,there are feral trash roaming the streets who have it in their minds to commit such acts and probably do when the opportunity presents. As i say, they should have been in school or somewhere more secure. Life in Britain eh? Students in Manchester are easy pickings for yobs.

Yes there are and have been for a while now but it's ok Vlad it's all the fault of us people on benefit as we don't know how to raise our kids :/. While i agree in some cases parents bear most of the blame it is certainly not enough cases for parents to be held accountable universally as some would like to see. Personally i believe we need stiffer punishments for what the kids do and a return of corporal punishment that while a violent act shows some of our "we can't be touched" kids that they can and quite easily as well.

But crime is falling, so you wouldn't have been in any danger
And it's not like the government would manipulate the figures is it?

There is an interesting piece on this website today about how easily figures can be adjusted to hide the true realities of criminal activity.

More than some cases, I'd say the majority of cases of loutishness comes down to the way the children have been brought up. If children see their parents or parent + latest partner drinking all day, not working, drifting around the periphery of crime and generally not contributing a huge amount to society their chances of becoming decent, hard working individuals isn't going to be that good.

Re: Feral youths and street crime..

Indeed, when i was a kid growing up in Manchester,I would sometimes hear parents telling their kids to behave otherwise they would end up in "Rose Hill". Rose Hill, for those not familiar, was one of the long gone Borstals into which unruly criminal youths were placed for attitude adjustment. It was in Rose Hill, near Marple,Cheshire.

The threat often worked and rowdy kids suddenly fell silent. We all knew a lad who had been in Rose Hill and we also knew he didnt want to go back in. He became a model citizen after that. Stopped his bad ways, got married, got a job etc..

Of course I'm not promoting gratuitous violence against anyone. I do howver support measured and structured correction.

Because if we don;t do it to them,,they WILL do it to us..

Well i know a few people on benefit as well as myself and they are good people doing their best to bring their kids up right. I have to say where i live the problem is not the benefit kids it is the kids from better off family's coming to rough up their life by hanging round the so called "poor area" but each to their own.

Re: Feral youths and street crime..

I was driving back from 5 aside football last month at approximately 11pm. On a street corner on the way home I saw about 5 lads, of which none looked a day over 14/15, just hanging around on bikes, chatting away.

They weren't causing any trouble, but I was left wondering why kids as young as them would be out at such a time on a Monday night. Coincidentally enough on the radio they were discussing curfews whereby those under 16 couldnt be out in the streets after 10 if they were not with an adult. I personally think that this could be a very good idea in some areas of the UK.

Re: Feral youths and street crime..

While i agree there is a problem and something needs to be done about it i am reluctent to allow anymore control of life to a government that can't stop meddling in people's lives already. More and more i read the headlines these days on the news and await the next step in controlling our lives to be announced by the government.

When i was a kid while some might object if i was too bad i got a slap as a punishment and i knew not to do it again likewise many times i had the "clip round the ear" from a local policeman and it hasn't destroyed my life or made me a violent person that does harm to others maybe thats what we need to get back too.
