I had just moved to Leeds then, after coming out of the RAF - it was really scary for women in Yorkshire at that time (due to the Yorkshire Ripper, not the fact I had just moved to Leeds); I used to always meet my girlfriend at the bus-stop after work, as she (and lots of others) were terrified of walking home alone due to that maniac Sutcliffe.

Re: The Suffolk 'Ripper'

Providing you prey on those that society will not miss, and providing you leave a time gap between killings, or hide the bodies well, you're unlikely to be detected until you're nearly in double figures. We're still rubbish at detecting patterns in crime, and as a society there are still those, both killers and victims, that are beyond our sight.

I cannot comment on behalf of the killers, but you are so right about the victims, GC.

How can we stop people feeling they need to sell a sordid act, as their most reliable source of income, for example?

I wonder how many of these murders are committed because the killers feel they're ridding the world of an evil? If it was legal and off the streets, it wouldn't happen, would it?

I do feel incredibly sorry for the women and their families though. It's terrible.

Re: The Suffolk 'Ripper'

These working girls belong to the oldest profession in the world, and they do an unenviable job. If not for them, there would undoubtedly be more sexual attacks on 'honest' females. Most don't 'choose' this 'work' but are forced into it by circumstances, a lot is drug related. It's time they had legalised brothels where the girls would protected from such as this guy they call Uncle, and they would be screened periodically for aids etc., and many other benefits too numerous to mention. I hope they catch this new 'ripper' soon, before any further murders are committed.

I have always struggled with this, some nutter goes around killing women because his mum was a prostitute, what happens if he then decides that his problems aren't his mums fault but instead his dad's who was a balloon seller, does he do then go round popping everyone's balloons, imo if they weren't killing prostitutes they would find someone another group of people to target

Re: The Suffolk 'Ripper'

The typical media frenzy on the over use of the word prostitute. Up to 5 prostitutes killed/missing etc etc, not women, one the local news tonight a womans body was labelled 'it' as in the context of "Police has found a female body, 'it' has now been taken away from the scene, it's believed to be a prostitute.

Ok the flip side of the coin they have to use certain words to get the message across bluntly as poss to warn other women in the same trade etc. But it's like sometimes they ain't woman but a sub species. It is a shame in this day and age.

Anyway I live in the center of Ipswich, and it is a worrying time, just hope they find the person(s) responsible as soon as possible.
