Maybe they owned the collection and dont really want it anymore!
You can now get USB turntables which could be used to turn them all into MP3 anyway

I suspect that collection started pre mp3 and besides most of the pleasure from some records in the 60's,70's and 80's was the artwork that went with the hard copy.

Lot of money that. Imagine spending over 3 million on records, and being able to!

Re: Serious record collection!
Maybe someone ought to email Capital Radio with that ebay auction? Might give them an excuse to play more than the 20 records they currently do..

Re: Serious record collection!
Although Mp3's are practical there is just something great about opening a vinyl or Cd and playing it and having the artwork and everything in your hand.
I wish I had that much music. I'd love to have such a big collection !

Not to mention the far superior sound quality if it's a decent recording and you've invested in a good sound system.
Unfortunately it's safe to say that a lot of what's recorded today isn't decent because engineers compress and limit the living daylights out of the dynamic range in recordings to optimise the way they sound on portable music players. It's a shame really because the technology available today would enable them to make something sound truly stunning (sorry, side rant there)

Also sorry for going OT, but this is interesting.
The loudness war.

This phenomenon can be observed in many areas of the music industry, particularly broadcasting and albums released on CD and DVD. In the case of CDs, the war stems from artists' and producers' desires to create CDs that sound as loud as possible or louder than CDs from competing artists or recording labels.
