People-smuggling network revealed

Given the huge numbers involved, do the sentences passed really serve as a deterrent to such people? Even the ringleader will probably be out in 5 years.

Given the price tag of £30,000 I'm wondering how many illegal immigrants can afford this.

Sell a kidney or something, I'd also like to know how they can afford the price?

Re: People-smuggling network revealed

..all of which lends some credibility to the claim that many of the illegals who come here aren't as poor as they'd like us to believe.

Here is a possibility: the extended family gets together, borrow heavily, pools the cash and makes the payment. It will be seen as an investment.

Re: People-smuggling network revealed

Whatever the reality and given the scale of this thing, I think the sentences are a bad joke.

They spend the rest of their lives working it off. Who said the cash has to be up front?

Earning 2p an hour and paying £300pcm in rent for a shared bed.

Or they borrow it, hoping to repay it with the wages earned. Like this family:

mmm Died working illegally in this country and want compensation from the government!

In my sleep little town in the past 12 months to my knowledge there have been a couple of raids to capture illegal immigrants. The first I know of was a Pakistani shop owner who had 17 illegal immigrants in a flat above his shop, and the other involvd about half a dozen middle east illegal immigrants in a flat above a Kebab shop.

I guess I would be called cynical if I were to suggest this is not two isolated incidents in my small sleepy town, would I be cynical to suggest it is going on up and down the country in other towns and villages!

The local Kebab shop owner has gone back to Turkey again, he owns the shop but it is legally not in his name. He hastily married a local Welsh woman a few months ago so I guess he is going to get a visa to return and then attempt to stop here permanently with his wife. She has openly boasted after having a few drinks that she has done very well for herself out of the deal, and before that she had an Iraqi asylum seeker living with her.

That would be the one who was in the pub with his other Iraqi mate that threatened to cut me into a thousand pieces because his ex-gf had come over to talk to me and he didn't like me talking to his property.

It's all too obvious they bring their voilent gang and knife culture along with their sob stories.
