Serving their country

Are the armed forces employed by the government who are on active service overseas subject to UK taxes whilst overseas ?
Also are diplomats employed by the government who are posted overseas subject to UK taxes whilst overseas?

No doubt you can guess where I am going with this!

Re: Serving their country

I believe (though not certain of the outcome) that thanks to Dave kicking up a fuss over active servicemen being taxed, Gordo mentioned something about stopping it (the taxing, not the active service).

Re: Serving their country

When I was in the RAF and stationed in West Berlin, we were taxed as normal.

Only difference was LOA (Living Overseas Allowance) wasn't taxed - it was to help fund the difference between UK costs and local costs, so it would have been a bit unfair to tax it.

Perhaps it's that or something similar that is being taxed now?

Re: Serving their country

they now get a tax free bonus if they are in a "hazardous area" - currently Iraq and Afghanistan.

It is supposed to work out better than not paying the tax.

Not seen it in action, and is was not backdated to when I was in Iraq, so can't comment of how effective it is.

LOA still exists, and is paid to all personnel serving overseas.
