system32 drivers pci.sys mising....... help, please

Hi all, well I done it again
I was using a prog called driver genius pro ( used it before with no problems ) to update some missing drivers. Upon a restart a got the message that System32/Drivers\pci.sys was missing or corrupted. I have tried doing a repair, but it fails to do anything, tried F8 for safe mode and last known good configuration but that just prompts me to do a repair, maybe I'm doing the repair bit wrong Pressing 'r' when prompted brings up a dos like screen, is that right ??

Anyone able to help me please, running XP Pro SP2 etc

TIA

EDIT: Posting this from the lappy.

Hi bopdude

In order to do a repair install, DO NOT chose 'to repair a windows XP installation using the recovery consol, press R' That will give you the DOS like prompt.

You need to accept the licence agreement, then it will search for existing installations. Select the instalation you want to repair from the list, and then press R.

Hope that helps

Abs

Had a look but didn't seem to be the problem I'm having, thanks though.

So I'm pressing 'r' to soon, I should go through the motions of doing an install

EDIT: When I follow the F8 route to accept I get the install options, I'm not seeing my xp install partition, only the second partition, now I'm really starting to get confused.

Re: system32 drivers pci.sys mising....... help, please

What I would try is boot from xp cd and allow to find operating systems then enter recovery and type fixmbr and reboot if that does not work and bartspe sees the partitions then id load a file of ultraiso or similar to your laptop extract the iso of barts pe download and extract the enclosed file and add the folder to your extracted iso files. Then create a new bootable iso with all the files you have. Boot from barts pe new iso and simply browse the cd and copy the pci.sys file to your windows system 32 drivers folder and see if that helps

Edit if the file exists rename the one you have to pci_sys to save it

Thanks mate, was just browsing the bart pe disk for the same file, I've found it in th i386 folder, the pci.sys file, so, should i just try a copy and paste, straight into the os windows system32\drivers folder, replacing any file found.

EDIT: Sorted, thanks all for the help, and of course, a big thanks to Bart

Zing, I have to whore about a bit before I can rep ya again, you know you da man
