cable jack not lighting up

ok.... so one day i stumbled a bit carrying my laptop to another room and the cable connected to the jack was pulled out quite quickly. When i put the cable back in, it stopped lighting up and it says network cable unplugged. I have restarted my computer a bunch of times and even tried my SMC cable adapter. I inserted the card in and added the cable to it but still, no results. The SMC card wasn't lighting up either. So now i can't use cables to connect to the internet. I don't know what can be the problem. I haven't tried a USB cable adapter but I doubt it will work. Anyone know what is the problem?

Presumably you have tried a different ethernet lead just in case it was that that sufferred?

Chances are though that you damaged the socket in the lappy. You can check if the pins have been twisted otherwise you have to assume the socket has been pulled off an internal mounting. A repair shop may be able to open the lappy up and check that out - have a look for a local shop rather than the PCworld type place.

You should be able to get an ethernet to USB adaptor as an alternative connection. Alternatively some PCMIA cards could provide an alternative ethernet port.
