Toshina Laptop PC100 Memory Cheap.

I have a old laptop that I would like my daughter to use but it is a a bit short of memory .Were is good for shopping for Pc 100 memory and it does not have to be new .

You're unlikely to get new 100MHz SDRAM SODIMMs but 133MHz should work. Give CCL tech support a call about these. Oh and check that the laptop specs say it will take 256Mb SODIMMs - some old laptops will only take up to 128Mb sticks.

Incidentally how much memory does it have and what do you want to run on it?

It has 128 of memory and is running XP ,mainly for Word and spreadsheets and hopefully just a very small bit of MSN (A Teenager ).

Bloody typical - 100MHz is even more expensive than 133MHz! You rekon the 133MHz won't work though? CCL also do free delivery on those sticks making it cheaper again. Plus I've never had any problems with CCL taking back stuff that doesn't work with a system.

That is a bit tight for XP and even for Ubuntu (don't slap me Zing!) - however on older hardware and especially with basic usage like that you might want to consider Ubuntu - it will be faster, more reliable and much more secure in novice hands than XP. Oh and there are chat clients for Ubuntu that work with MSN.

If the OP could get it installed and the user could get to grips with open office and then could get a printer and or scanner installed I would agree however ......

Incidentally in the name of fair play I tonight installed vmware and installed ubuntu feisty and pclinux to give it a go and even then had to have fun in terminal just to install the vmtools. On a xp vm it just runs a nice simpel wizard go figure

Ubuntu is a popular (Zing might suggest I am stretching the definition of the word here) flavour of the Linux operating system designed to be easy to install and use by a non-technical person and, as such, a viable Open Source (and free) alternative to Windows, a proprietary system.

I can't argue with you that for more esoteric scenarios Ubuntu is a bit geeky (have you tried SUSE?) but for day-to-day computing it's a dream, including installation. I'm sure you know what a pain it is getting everything to work on a laptop if you have to do a fresh install of Windows.

I have a Toshiba Tecra M3 on loan from my workplace and being unhappy with it's performance under Windows XP I thought I would try Ubuntu - one CD, one installation routine, 15 minutes, all the hardware was working and fast: wireless, sound, touch-pad features, power-saving, etc.. And all of the applications I needed came with the OS. I'll say it again: one CD, one install, 15 minutes.

Ubuntu and Linux are not the answer to everything and we can both tell stories where both Windows and flavours of Linux fall down or excel. But I genuinely believe that this is precisely the kind of situation in which Ubuntu does excel.

I have taken a look at Ubuntu and have downloaded it as a Iso ,I will be giving it a go today as it does look interesting .Is it possible use to files created in Word or Spreadsheets on both OS or is that asking a bit much .

Yep - by default Open Office saves documents in it's own format but it's straightforward to change the defaults to M$ Office formats (Word, Excel, Powerpoint...), just go to Tools > Options > Load/Save > General
