The return of the mainframe?
Apparently, to save energy, IBM is to restructure it's data centres using a new versions of a very old technology. The Mainframe.
It is to consolidate the functionality of 3,900 linux and unix based servers into 30 linux based mainframes, and save enough electricity in the process to power a small town.
How ironic that a technology that was replaced (in a lot of companies) because it was out of date and seen as ineffiecient (compared to PCs) should start to make a little bit of a comeback.

Re: The return of the mainframe?
It's no great surprise: combine the huge advances in networking technology with the imperatives to cut both energy use and support requirements (i.e. geeks like me ) and this kind of development makes sense.

Re: The return of the mainframe?
No great surprise that IBM have pulled this publcity stunt out of the hat but something of a surprise that they hadn't done this 5+ years ago!
Nice to see big blue following the example of it's customers and business partners though

Re: The return of the mainframe?
This isnt really new concept, the blade centres do the same job, in my job I managed a project to consolidate 150 Dell servers - got a beefy IBM ISeries with terrabytes of disk space, bought a couple of racks of blade centre and used the disk storage on the ISeries, and used IBM Tivoli TSM to back up the data, ok cost alot (nearly half a million) but its been worth it and you have to say IBM kit certainly is the dogs bolloxs, never fails or breaksdown.

Did you set up virtual WinTel environments for the ex-Dell applications? IBM were trying to sell that to me on the iSeries in 2003, but it wasn't mature enough then (imho).

It's not really a new concept (and I never claimed it was, hence the thread title), but mainly because Mainframes have been in use since around the late 40's.
Still, both mainframes and blades are a lot more efficient than 3.900 servers..
