Why does this not surprise me in the least? We've been at various high level threat alerts for ages and yet basic checks which could be done aren't, it appears.
Apparently in Switzerland last year 100 people were caught as a result of such checks on 300,000 passports - I wonder how many more would be caught here if our authorities could be bothered.
Re: Absent passport checks despite high current threat level
Trouble is our government loves to talk tough but doesn't like making that much of an effort or putting the money in. Give the illusion of effort and safety and the public are happy seems to be their mantra. UK borders have been a problem for quite a while and yet nothing ever seems to be done about it but get a human rights issue and wollah we can resolve them in no time flat.
Re: Absent passport checks despite high current threat level
Yes, it was only the other day when the humble, listening Gordy told us all how public safety was his top priority and that his govt. would be doing all they could to maintain it. Obviously the term 'all we can' doesn't include checking for dodgy passports.
Re: Absent passport checks despite high current threat level
Ah but gordon will now deny having anything to do with this situation until he took over thus exempting him of any blame. Used to be that a party would blame the last government for everything they failed to sort out so it really is new labour they have found a new excuse for old failings.

Well I'd have more sympathy for good old fGordy if he hadn't been at the epicentre of the New Labour Government from day one.
