Attorney General Lord Goldsmith is to step down next week.

Tony Blair praised the work of Lord Goldsmith and said he could look at his time as attorney general with "personal and professional pride".

Re: Lord Goldsmith to step down

He's only "stepping down" because he knows Brown was intent on sacking him.

Re: Lord Goldsmith to step down

'Good heavens, Gordon, I notice that you've opened the window over there, do you mind if I just step through it to save you the trouble of pushing me?'

Good riddance to bad rubbish. The office of attorney general is now permanently compromised by being seen as an adjunct to the PM and the ruling party, and urgently needs reform. Not bad going for a mild-mannered inoffensive commercial lawyer (which, one can argue, is precisely why he was picked - imagine that going up against the best legal brains the neocons could buy).

Re: Lord Goldsmith to step down

Two of the worst Attorney Generals in history - Lord Goldsmith and Alberto Gonzalez. Both have justified the supreme international crime - aggression and endorsed torture.
