Prison Figures

I tried to find a breakdown on prison figures. I never thought this sort of breakdown would be available to the public, the figures in the links below are gained from different sources and different dates. It would difficult to obtain accurate figures and I think it would be silly to nit pick over the odd 10,000 people or so taken from different dates and sources, but the figures make interesting reading.

http://www.publications.parliament.u...61129w0019.htm

Dr. Tony Wright: To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many foreign nationals are in prison, broken down by

country of origin. [102371]

Mr. Sutcliffe: Information on the numbers of foreign nationals held in prison establishments in England and Wales, broken down by country of origin, can be found in the following table drawn from data held on the Prison IT system, showing the position on 30 September 2006.

In a nutshell the figures for prisoners in the link above were as follows.

All nationalities
79,355

UK nationals
67,602

Foreign nationals
10,928

Not recorded
825

Intersting countries listed that were high were:

Algeria
Ghana
Nigeria (very high what a surprise)
Somalia (No surprise)
South Africa (No surprise)
Zimbabwe (No surprise)
China (That one surprised me)
India
Pakistan
Sri Lanka
Vietnam
Irish Republic (Obviously lot of dodgy irish about!)
Lithuania
Turkey (No surprise)
Iran
Iraq
Jamiaca (No surprise there either)

Figures for regions.

Africa 3051
Europe 3155 (Irish Republic high percentage)
West Indies 1826
Asia 1701
Middle East 652
cent/south America 368
North America 127

These figures (in Link below) show 24.6% of prisoners are from the black community, but these figures include UK nationals and foreign nationals. It still makes the UK national figures for the black community very high. Interesting to find a breakdown on UK population (I know they have been posted before) and take the Foreign national figures away, just to see what the percentage of UK national black people are in prison.

The process of criminalisation continues; for example, 24.6% of the prison population are from Black communities; including foreign nationals, the average population of African and Caribbean prisoners has risen since 1994, by 113% and for Asian prisoners by 75% as compared with a 34% rise for White prisoners; there is a greater likelihood of custodial sentences, especially for first time offences; Black African or Caribbean people are also six times more likely to be arrested although Asian people are only slightly more likely to be arrested than White people.

The latest figures from the Home Office show that at the end of February there were 10,265 foreign prisoners in England and Wales. The total prison population was 76,670.

Foreign prisoners make up almost 82 per cent of the 249 women being held in Morton Hall jail, Lincolnshire. More than half of the 1,200 inmates in Wormwood Scrubs, West London, almost half of the 287 male inmates in The Verne, at Portland, Dorset, and almost a quarter of inmates in Pentonville, North London, are foreign. Wormwood Scrubs holds more foreigners than any other prison. They come from 85 countries and speak at least 24 languages.
More than half the foreign prisoners are from Pakistan, Turkey, India, Jamaica, the Irish Republic and Nigeria. Four out of ten sentenced men and eight out of ten sentenced women have been convicted of drug offences. The huge increase in foreign prisoners is a result of much easier international travel, the collapse of the Berlin Wall and the lifting of visa restrictions for
Eastern Europeans before the former Soviet states joined the EU.
