Wireless for Laptop Only

Hi,

I have got a Virgin Media Broadband Cable connection. I only have a laptop, but want to make the connection wireless to my laptop.

Do I need a stand alone computer for a wireless router,
or will the wireless router work by itself just plugged into the cable modem.

If so - Which router is recommend to do this for me.

thanks for your help,
Rob
