Can anyone throw any light where these messages have gone? the problem is if I drag the messages to the relevant folders but drop them half way across they seem to disappear

Have you looked in the other folders - I have done the same thing, and they appear to go in the nearest folder to where you "dropped" them.

Yes checked deleted folder in fact that's where they were going into a sub folder This has happened about 3 times and only when you've passed into the folders pane
