Proxies to be Removed :D

Well according to a post by the admin on cablehell http://cablehell.co.uk/forums/index....dpost&p=290171 ntl proxies are to be removed from 23rd March. I haven't seen a time when they have been wrong so far so I'm fairly sure that the news is true . If it is I'm very happy as I've had so many problems with proxies.

So has anyone been removed from the proxy yet? Check http://www.ioerror.us/ip/ to see if it says you are using a proxy server or not.

I haven't been on a proxy for a while either. Sorry to sound dumb but what difference does it make if you're on a proxy or not?

Re: Proxies to be Removed :D

There is no longer a default proxy on my connection (Guildford). It was definitely still running through one last week but is there no more.

Thank goodness for that as the "hunt for the working proxy" is now a thing of the past.

Re: Proxies to be Removed :D

Well I'm in Bromley and by the looks of it I still have a proxy. Glad to see that people have had their proxy removed .

http://ben.cheetham.me.uk/resources/net/what-is-my-ip This sites also good cause it lets you know the specific Ntl proxy that you are on. I'm on a bromley one so maybe everyone in the bromley area has not been moved yet.

Re: Proxies to be Removed :D

I am still on a proxy, (see below)

"You are using a proxy server located at 80.4.224.6."

Have to use one as my connection is so slow otherwise. What will happen if they do get rid of proxies? Will anyone on one automatically be cut off and have to reset back to automatic in tools/connections/lan settings themselves?

Thanks for the post because if that happened I would be wasting time trying to sort the problem before getting to this stage.

Re: Proxies to be Removed :D

I have just found out that only the ex-ntl proxy servers are about to be turned off. Ex-telewest customers can still use proxies.

''We were not able to detect use of a proxy server. If we were able to determine it, the IP address of your proxy server will be displayed here.'' i dont have proxy server then? :s
the proxy servers are effectively a cache, when your browser requests a page, the system looks to see if a copy exists on the proxy server, first, if it does then the page downloads from there. If not then the request is passed to the original source. The idea is too maximise the amount of traffic within the VM internal network where data transfer is effectively 'free', rather than having to pay to use external networks.

the forum link marked 'connection' at the top of the page ^ will tell you if you are using a proxy server.
