Best router ?
hiya, I did a search but not much luck so thought I would ask.
My work need me to be able to work from home and have given me a new laptop, I need to be able to conect it to the internet so they have sais buy a router and they will pay so which one shall I get?
at the mo i have a cheap wired one but want a good wireless one .
I have a pc and xbox 360 which may as wel be wired as they are right where the router will be, and now a laptop which is wireless.
I'm on 10meg if that makes any diff and will be going to 20 as soon as i can
thanks

Re: Best router ?
Personally I use linksys - the router I have in my house has been on for the last 3 and a half years with only the occassional (maybe weekly) restart needed!

Re: Best router ?
moved to networking
I've found the Linksys WRT54G series to be good, although there are now a number of different versions. However, the Linksys firmware has been known to have problems with torrents so flashing with third party firmware can reap results. http://www.linksysinfo.org/forums/sh...ad.php?t=47159 the DD-WRT seems to be popular

Re: Best router ?
I have been using a D-Link DI-634M (MIMO) router and PCI card for over twelve months now without a hitch. Previously I had a Belkin (kept dropping link) and a wired LinkSys.
The D-Link seems rock solid at 108M.

Re: Best router ?
I'm a big fan of the Linksys WRT54GL - and it'd be rude not to get it at this price:
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...odid=NW-052-LS
Linksys WRT54GL Wireless-G Broadband Router/4-Port Switch
£25.99
£30.54 inc VAT
10+ in stock

yeah Gareth, but his works paying for it, cant we find him the fastest available 11N MiMo or WiMax kit
then he can report back and let us all know how it went, and dont forget the matching PCCARD/pcmcia card to got with the router , or perhaps even a matching PCi card too.
im busy right now so cant look up on the 3rd party firmwares whats available......

Anything that can run DD-WRT firmware, most functional firmware ever.

funny you mention that
http://www.graynetwork.org/ddwrtx86/
Requirements:
An X86 compatible pc (i386) or greater with at least 16MB of RAM, 2 network cards, and a hard drive.
----------------------------------------------
he said works paying for the kit, so he's best looking for something with 11n and gigabit router to the wired bits for the future id think.
i cant say if its any good as i dont have it but the WRT350N. It's got Gigabit switch for your lan, it's well supported by DD-WRT(v24 latest betas for the moment) and it has 802.11n. seems ok , need to look into it for the full spec.
wimax kit doesnt seem to be covered very well as yet though .

Re: Best router ?
Yeah, good point, popper... I forgot that he's not paying for it himself.
I wonder if you can get gold-plated routers anywhere...?

Would waste loads of energy though, and wireless would be a hassle?

Re: Best router ?
If you're using it for work you'll probably need to ensure it supports VPN pass through.
Personally I'd stick with a wired router (I'm using a Linksys befsr41). Faster speeds, more reliable connection and no security issues.
