Noisy box
V+, not the missus
I accept that when the box is 'on' that there will be some noise from the hard disk and associated cooling, but why doesn't that disappear when you put it into standby?
I presume that this affects everyone, not just me?

Re: Noisy box
My V+ is quite silent. There is no fan. You might be hearing the hard disk bearings.

Re: Noisy box
Try putting something under the legs of the box (felt pads or small rubber washers) - did that to mine, and the noise stopped.

Re: Noisy box
Being a environment friendly sort of person , does anyone know what the power consumption of the V+ box is, and if you switch it off at the mains when you are away, does it retain all its settings?

Has anyone noticed that when it is in standby, the light is quite powerful. I got up in the middle of the night and I thought I'd forgotten to switch my main lounge light off! It was like daylight down there!

Re: Noisy box
I have measured the power consumption in standby and it is a whopping 28Watts! I have contacted VM about this but had no reply. I know the Sony PVR had the same power consumption until they issued an over air software upgrade, now it is much lower. Hopefully VM will do the same...

Re: Noisy box
I got so fed up with the VERY loud whirring and gratey sound coming from my V+ box that I called C/S who are sending someone around next week.

Re: Noisy box
I put mine on standby and it started making more noise than when it was "on" so I'm leaving it on all the time - not good for my electricity bill or the environment I guess - but the noise was too much!
Let us know what CS does about it?
For those of you who have had new boxes I guess they don't download your recorded programmes off the original V+ box?

AFAIK they just swap boxes if they feel your current box is faulty - this will be quite frustrating as I am V+'ing lots of proggy's over Easter as I will be away.
I have the TV Drive silver box - was wondering if people with the new black Virgin Media box have similar problems with noise.
It doesn't matter whether I have the box in standby or if it is on, the noise is there - it's sporadic.
Knowing my luck it'll behave normally when the engineer comes out next week!!!!
Rick.

how do you measure the power consumption? I also think that a dimmer device could be incorporated in order to dim the display lights when the box is "sleeping"

I had V+ installed yesterday, in the bedroom, and got one of the black VM branded boxes. Well, it was branded VM outside, but when the engineer powered it up, it said Telewest Broadband until the software update was downloaded... now it's VM throughout!
Anyway - noise. It's not too bad. There is an audible hum, but this is amplified by the fact that it's in a wooden TV stand... great for bass, not so good for noise from the V+ or the DVD recorder! But it wasn't loud enough to keep me awake. I might yet do what has been suggested elsewhere, and get something to put under the feet... that should render it pretty much silent.
