[Merged] 4.1 Ghz Dual Core Pentium 805 Monster

So there i was just happily browsing the web when i spots this...

A 4.1 GHz Dual Core at £79.95 - Can it be True?
http://tomshardware.co.uk/2006/05/10..._uk/page2.html

So as im a tight Scottish lad who wants to get everything for next to nothing this was irresistable as i need to upgrade my PC.

So to quote from the article above and explain what im about to do:-

Quote:
The bottom line is that the Athlon FX-60 and the Pentium Extreme Edition 965 have both met their match - there's simply no escaping this conclusion! This is bound to cause lamentation among the elite circle of users who've invested big bucks in their high-end systems, if not outright wailing and rending of garments. The basic stats for this insignificant-seeming budget processor read as follows: Pentium D 805 clocked at 2.66 GHz, equipped with two processor cores both with 64 bit support. At your friendly neighbourhood retailer you can pick up this secret weapon for pocket change - right now, for example, it's available at overclockers.co.uk for just £79.95, including VAT. We were quite amazed as the first performance figures emerged from our test labs: stable operation was possible at 4.1 GHz, and without even the need for substantial boosts to cooling!
How could i refuse... So off to Komplett i went and bought one of these bundles. (£216 quid inc delivery)

Essentially its a:-

Intel Pentium D 805 2.66GHz Socket LGA775, 4MB, BOXED w/fan
ABIT AL8-V, Intel 945P, Socket-775, ATX, SATAII, Dual-DDR2, GbLAN, PCI-Ex16
TwinMOS DDR2 PC4300 1024MB Dual Pack KIT w/two matched DDR2 PC4300 512MB CL4

So as this is to upgrade my current PC for a new one for as next to nothing as possible (My 2500+ was getting long in the tooth) i need to also upgrade my GFX card because my overclocked X800 Pro, which has been flashed to an X800XT and had all its pipes opened, forced to 500/500 - is AGP.

So's anyway - Ebay - equivalent PCI card 60 quid or theres about.

Now cooling - i already have water cooling so all i need to do is change the waterblock for the CPU to a compatible one for the 775 chipset. The Thermaltake CPU Water Block, CL-W0010, (subject to change at time of writing) seems to fit the bill at 25 quid (inc delivery).

So thats a top 'o' the range kick ass mofo PC for less than 300 quid IF i can pull this off.

I already have a 500w enermax supply so that should be Ok - and i can flog my existing stuff (like my AGP card and memory) on Ebay so i might get this back down to around 200 quid for the upgrade.

An interesting project don't you think?

Assuming it works... I will keep you uptodate on this one.

Re: Im going for it - Monster O/C on Pentium D 805

It will work. Seen it done a thousand times (well, maybe not a thouasand, but a substantial amount) Alot of people have been doing things like this, and it seems that the Conroe will do exactly the same, only, it will be alot more powerful to begin with.

I've got a Celeron D 335 upto 3.6Ghz, and i've seen 5Ghz frm a frenchie.

Good luck with this project, and i might be interested in that GFX card of yours, how much you asking?

By the way, i'll happily bench against you when you're done for some comparisons if need be

Not sure mate, a quick look on Ebay shows prices from 110 (non VIVO) to 140 (VIVO flashed as i have) for this card (AGP) over the last few days (sold ones - not unsold).

So, somewhere about there i suppose.

Care to PM me an offer and we can discuss or is that more than you were expecting? (It was more than i though they were going for TBH).

Re: Im going for it - Monster O/C on Pentium D 805

I'm seriously tempted to do it too... I can't believe the results they get from an £80 chip. I reckon they're gonna sell out PDQ once other peeps get wind of this.

I would need to get approval from my financial controller, but should be getting my yearly bonus soon, which would cover everything I'd need, so she might let me get away with it.

One thing I'd be worried about though is the amount of noise that Zalman hsf kicks out running at full pelt. Don't fancy going down the water cooled route, so would have to be air cooled which is gonna be noisy at that high a temp.

Anyway, from a huge AMD fan, this is damn good stuff!

Re: Im going for it - Monster O/C on Pentium D 805

One thing to watch here peeps - i've been investigating this in a little more detail and have actually cancelled my komplett order for the time being.

The bundle mentioned above comes with

TwinMOS DDR2 PC4300 1024MB Dual Pack KIT w/two matched DDR2 PC4300 512MB CL4

Now this is DDR 2 PC4300 memory but flicking through the toms hardware link we see the following table:-

Pentium D 805 with 20x Multiplier
FSB clock CPU clock
133 MHz (Default rate) 2.66 GHz
140 MHz 2.80 GHz
150 MHz 3.00 GHz
160 MHz 3.20 GHz
166 MHz 3.33 GHz
170 MHz 3.40 GHz
180 MHz 3.60 GHz
190 MHz 3.80 GHz
200 MHz 4.00 GHz
205 MHz 4.10 GHz
210 MHz (THG clock) 4.20 GHz
215 MHz (Maximum boot clock) 4.30 GHz

Which means that to reach 3.8 Ghz we need a FSB speed of 190Mhz - However the FSB speed also relates to the Memory speed also. Depending on how we can set the multiplier on the motherboard will depend on how far we can push the memory as well.

So the motherboards memort multiplier needs to be able to be changed DOWN from 4 (normal multiplier) otherwise my 4300 Memory is going to need a serious reconcideration.

190 * 4 = 7600 Memory.... (if i understand this correctly)

It needs to be 2 or 2.5 if we are going to keep it stable (3800 - 4750).

FSB (MHz) Multiplier Bandwidth
133 - 148 3.00 DDR2-400 up to 444
133 - 148 4.00 DDR2-533 up to 592
149 - 266 2.00 DDR2-298 up to 533
149 - 266 2.66 DDR2-396 up to 710
149 - 266 3.00 DDR2-447 up to 800
149 - 266 3.33 DDR2-496 up to 888
149 - 266 4.00 DDR2-596 up to 1066

I need to check the motherboards manuals in more details before i go ahead with this to see what support it has for the memory multipliers.

Edit: checked the manual - but it doesent go into much detail about the BIOS memory timings available.

Need to look elsewhere.

Re: Im going for it - Monster O/C on Pentium D 805

That cpu looks like its been designed with this in mind, a ridiculously low fsb and a high multiplier just cries out.At 4 gig you wont even be overclocking the ram

I too like Gareth am an ATI fanboy but this is certainly appealing

Noticed last post im not sure off how DDR2 works
The 6400 will run at 800mhz doesnt that hit the 4 gig?

Yeah, maybe forget buying a DIY kit and just buy the bits they detailed on p14 of your article... at least you know that it's been made to work with that hardware.

The good ram is bloody expensive and it appears to run at real high latency isnt that the trouble all along with ddr2

Very good choice, and any DDR2-800 Ram would work, go for the ones with lower latencies obviously

Pricing one of these up now
As long as i can flog this PC i shall be all set

Re: Im going for it - Monster O/C on Pentium D 805

Looking at another 100 quid for the same amount of memory (1Gig) over the Twinmos 4300 stuff to something like 5300 from OCZ.

You could get away, maybe, with something like the Corsair 2GB DDR2 Value Select PC5300 Dual Channel Kit.

But thats the week point now... still its 2 gig as oppsed to one at the same price as the OCZ.

But to play it safe and have the memory you need (2gb) - you really something like 6400 memory like the Corsair at 200 quid here..

Borrox..!

---------- Post added at 01:00 ---------- Previous post was at 00:57 ----------

Just priced it up with the 6400 Corsair memory - instead of 210 quid its 370 assuming the same bundle but without the memory and bought seperately obviosuly.

Meh! Bah Humbug!

Re: Im going for it - Monster O/C on Pentium D 805

well if the cpu can handle it then it will still be a monster machine for the cash.Of course just cuz Toms hardware can do it does not mean you will be able to,However if you can get the cpu say upto 3.2 gig then your still going to have a very powerful machine for the cash so its still gonna be a good project even if you go with lesser ram surely

In that case google overclocking the opteron 165. Give as good as fx-60 performance without the cost so they say. I'd love to try it but my 'financial controller' will not go for it.
