Check yer bills..

It can't only be me who doesn't always check their NTL (or other) bills right away, can it?

Aaaaaanyway, this time I did, as I was keen to know what I was being charged for this month - it varies from one bill to the next, and I knew there was a new billing system in place.
First up, wrong name on the bill. Also charged £4 for non-direct debit payment.
Been with NTL with the same bank account and DD set up for absolutely donkey's years.
Fortunately, David at the call centre up North was not only clued up, but a pleasure to deal with. However, he said that the system was showing an incorrect name (should be M. ****** and was coming up as Ma. ****** ) and that my direct debit had been cancelled, and that was really all the new system would let him know.
We agreed we'd have to chalk it up as 'one of those things...'.
So, as the new system wouldn't let him reinstate the DD, I had to pay by debit card, no big deal - he added £4 credit to my account and set up a new DD.
I checked with the bank and they hadn't stopped the DD, and it was still set up on their system. Now, David assured me there would only be ONE payment taken (my debit card one) - but said I needn't cancel the previous DD as the new one will just take over - this worries me.
Common sense says I should now have TWO DD's on my account, but apparently not.
I'll wait with baited breath until the 15th of Jan and check to see if the DD goes out as well I think. Hard lines if it does I suppose, as in my experience, NTL don't refund however much they take by mistake - they just credit the account..
I was also getting a discount due to a previous NTL error which seems to have been stopped too, despite being told it was for 6 months.
I was on hold to 08000529403 for 70 minutes before I gave up ( I wasn't *that* desperate - I had it on speakerphone while I made the tea. ).
Ho hum.

My point is this - check your bill immediately if you don't already.
I imagine if I'd have been out of the country for a couple of weeks as I have been every Xmas bar this one, I'd have probably ended up with a late payment charge.

i check my bill every month, NTL havent managed to get my bill correct once in the last 6 months! To be honest its getting to the point where if they mess it up much more they wont have a bill to send me!

I pay with paypoint and have a £4 charge for non-dd charge, what the hell is that for then? what number do i call to sort it out?

Far as I know, if you don't pay by DD, you pay a surcharge of £4?
Customer Services is 150 from your NTL phone.
Not sure of it's proper number - there's a sticky thread on here with them all in.

I`M afraid thats what they do,if you don`t pay by DD they seem to think its ok to charge you an enormous amount.
When that came in i voted with my feet,told them i would not pay that amount and would be pleased if they could justify it,needless to say they could not,just keept on about it being a simalar amount to other tv/telephone companys.
So i checked with bt,they charge £1 yes £1 not £4 like ntl
Having been on the wrong end of ntls billing system (many many times)
there was no way i was going to allow them access to my bank account.
So i told them i would not pay,they said i would have to or my services would be cut off.
I just cancelled every service there and then and went to bt and sky,best move i`ve made in a long time.

yeah just called and it's cos i dont pay DD so i'll set that up but this is the 1st month i've been charged the £4 and i've been paying on that card for years.

The main reason i called was because looking at my bank statements they had'nt charged me for my broadband in ages, they said it was crediting my account instead of taking payment so they let me off with all the free BB!!

Update.
Just got this months bill and I've been charged the £4 even though I had a direct debit that has been set up for donkey's years & CS said it would be refunded and show as a credit. It shows as:
Balance brought forward £4.00
I've not had a correct bill in months now. Seriously tempted to cancel the lot today. The TV is a pile of dung most of the time, just need basic internet access and a phone - stuff it. So tired of being shafted month after month by NTL now.

Yeah, they did that last time but all the discounts have disappeared now and I remember being on the phone (just seen the number in my first post - lol) for over an hour to sort it and never got through.
Just checked the NTL page. I want the free TV offer because I have a phone line, or I'll cancel and get a cheap freeview box and I want 2MB broadband for the £10 new customers are getting it for.

Finally got through to retentions who were as professional and courteous as ever.
Altered my services set up/pricing and halved my bill - been assured yet again that the £4 will be credited to my account next month. Now on the free TV package so that saves me buying a freeview box. Was given a deal on my BB rather than drop it to 2MB though I asked them to drop everything to lowest possible. Just had a look through the channels - we've still got all the ones we watch anyway - we had the base pack and there was just channel after channel of crap. THIS list is wrong though. I've got Sky One which isn't on the list, but I don't have E4+1 which is.
I guess at that point, I'm off topic for the forum though.
