Help - My router keeps freezing

System: Dell Dimension 4550, 1 GB RAM, 2.53 Processor
OS: Windows XP Home SP2 - Fully updated
Network Adapter: D-Link DGE-530T
Router: D-Link DI-624 108mbps Extreme G.
Modem: Motorola SB5100i
ISP: Telewest/4mb connection.

Please can somebody kindly help/advise with the following problem?

I use utorrent 1.6 and have recently noticed that my torrents drop to 0kbps either upload or download, by a process of elimination I found that the router is freezing up and needs to be rebooted on a regular basis (every few minutes). I have contacted Telewest and they have run diagnostics on the modem, they inform me that there are no faults with the modem, I have changed the RJ45 cables from both the pc to router and router to modem (new cables), The router is brand new as my old deceased Belkin router found its way under my feet in a fit of temper (I also had this problem with the Belkin), I next suspected that the problem may be with the ethernet adapter which is onboard so I replaced it with the model above.....the problem still persists.

My next step was to move on to a wireless Netgear adapter WG111T...the problem has disappeared and I am able to upload at my correct speed and also download, I have had advice regarding utorrent and the settings which are all fine. This problem has only started in the last few weeks. I have also tried putting my pc in the DMZ bypassing the router protocols but I still have the problem, I have tried using the USB connection from the pc to the modem which works fine (but I cannot use this method permenantly as I need wireless for my lad to use his pc and the router has only Cat5 RJ45 connections in and out).

So to summerise, My connection drops out and the router freezes up so I need to restart it every few minutes.

Does anyone have expertise in this field who could help me?

Many thanks in advance.

Re: Help - My router keeps freezing

Have you tried using something like Net limiter and restricting your P2P upload to just below the maximum limit. NTL used to have a problem with STB's if you maxed out the upload the same thing would happen.

Re: Help - My router keeps freezing

Hi Wicked and Crazy,

Yes mate, I set the max global upload in utorrent to 10% less than my max upload but even when not uploading and just downloading (even at minimum speeds) the router freezes over and over....odd that wirelessly I have no trouble at all.

Thanks for your reply.

Re: Help - My router keeps freezing

Have you tried resetting your router back to the factory settings?

Re: Help - My router keeps freezing

Today I have tried changing the channel settings on the router, by default the router uses (and can only use) channel 6 in Super G + Turbo mode, I dropped the router into Super G - Turbo and then in turn started playing with the channels, I found that the connection lasted longer on channel 8 and was very fast upload & download for about 10-15 mins, then the router froze again.....I'm still picking away at the problem.

Any more ideas chuck 'em in the pile please

---------- Post added at 15:56 ---------- Previous post was at 14:20 ----------

I finally found the fault/s

1/ The firmware on the router needed updating from v4.02 March 2006 to v4.03 May 2006

2/ The 'NEW' Cat5 RJ45 that came with the router is faulty, swapping the cables around to different positions revealed that it was crap, So I'm of to Maplins to get some decent cables asap, for now its working full steam.

3/ Although I don't suspect that it directly affects the networking, the clock settings within the router will not stick either and constantly need resetting, not a problem in the grand scheme of things but don't you just love the build quality of the chinese goods we have to put up with these days?

Thanks all for your time, advice and input....preesh!
