Is the possible for the lay person to do and are there any limitations to what a person can find.............

What happens if the person has given a false address can a location be found by the IP address associated with the email ?

Thanks

Relatively easy : just look at all the mail headers and it'll show you the connection IPs from where the mail originated.

Trouble is that the original host might be an open relay or even spoof

ps best not reply or complain or you get more SPAM

Re: Tracing hotmail accounts

...and if it is legit, then only their ISP is able to correlate the IP to a particular customer at a particular date/time.

Re: Tracing hotmail accounts

NOT SRICTLY true, the NSA has filed a patent on a system to geolocate from an IP address in realtime, though for us mere mortals such a facility is not something we would have access to, I mention it only for the purpose of keeping facts straight
