advent laptop

ok sorry to be a pain but im still not clear on this.
since i have fitted the battery on my laptop i have never taken it out and only used it without the power lead connected. apart from that i always have the power lead connected. even when i turn the laptop off the liitle light on the battery inicator stays green. if i pull the plug out all the indicator lights go off. when i turn the power supply on a red light comes on for 40 secs and then turns back green. phew.. so my questions are

1. is it safe to leave the power cord in constantly and have the green button light stay on?

2. when i pull out the lead and put it back in and the light comes on red should i wait for it to turn green before booting up the pc?

3. i have read somewhere that having the pc on standby and the power lead attatched ruins the battery, is this true?

4. if the battery did die completely would the pc work completely the same with just the power lead or do you always have to have a charged battery in there?

sorry about all the questions, and your prob thinking why dosent she just read the manual like and normal person!! well i have but it dosent say anything about this in the book!! anyway i trust you guys more

TBH don't worry about it. I leave my lappy plugged in most of the time, whether or not it is in use. Iv'e never had any noticeable problems.

Any rechargeable battery will gradually degrade. It's just one of those things. YOu can get paranoid about it, or accept it. If you do go using it mobile a lot, then you might want to get a backup battery, but most users find the existing battery life more than adequate.

And most lappys will work powered even if the battery is useless.

oh, so does the baterry indicator light stay on all the time with you aswell when your leads plugged in?

Think this is just your laptop saying it's running off battery instead of the mains, and when you plug it back in it'll start charging the battery for you again. Don't bother waiting, I don't. You can use the laptop even when the battery isn't charged to 100% without it causing any problems what so all.

Dunno, maybe... but I'd imagine it'll shorten it's overall life by a short amount, and I'd suggest you'd either have outgrown and sold the laptop before then, or that some other component on it will have broken before the battery goes to the big recycling centre in the sky.

4. if the battery did die completely would the pc work completely the same with just the power lead or do you always have to have a charged battery in there? It'll work fine just running from the mains without a battery - the only problem is if you accidentally unplug the cable then your laptop will shut down immediately (like a desktop PC would) whereas with a battery installed, you'd carry on as normal and not lose your work. You can test running your lappy without the battery by just removing it - trust me, you won't break it

P.S If your lappy is still under guarantee, you might be able to get another battery off Advent. I got one off HP!

Not if it was bought from dixons, currys or PC World and is over 6 months old. Batteries are classed as peripherals and after 6 months are not covered by the warranty.

Well once a month or so I turn off all power saving options and give my laptop some heavy app to run until the battery runs flat then I give it a full recharge rest of the time its plugged in when its at home

Nah Advent batteries are 12 months.

I usually run my laptop on battery at least once a week so it can reset its internal "fuel" meter. I leave mine plugged in all the time, 24/7 except when Im using it on the battery, and ive had it two years with no battery lifetime decrease.

thanks guys, i shall leave mine plugged in then, i know that when the green light flashes its charging so when its just solid green it must be full charged. i was just worried as i know its not good to leave mobile phones plugged in all the time. thanks again guys
