Remote power bar / Powering up an ATX box remotely

Whilst looking around for a place to hid a few servers I think a few will go back to that little closet under the stars.

Trouble is that I don't want to run them 24/7 as I used to do in the good 'ol days (I know this is bad on the disks but recently I have been thinking of fire risks for some reason - prolly due to a young nipper who will be arriving home).

Anyway question is I know we can get powerbar that can interrupt the power to a PC remotely but can I get one that will boot the machine up also or is there an alternative way of doing it ?

What about standby mode, No good? You could even have it rigged to be woken up over the LAN.

Nope the PSU is still powered up and running the mobo and ram full whack this is no good.

I think some BIOS do have settings in them that enable the PC to autostart when the PC is repowered. My ASUS PW5H has that function as "restore on AC Power Loss"

Oh yeh thats sweet !

I tried it on one of selected machines and it works ! Just plug my Home automation switch on the other end and hey presto its integrated can turn it on n off via wireless remote, web, wap etc now cool.... Just hope the other PC has the same bios option.

I was thinking of having a relay on the power switch button but would be too messy this way is neater.

Dont forget to shut the PC down before you turn it off!!!

Having anything flamable in a cupboard under the stairs is a fire hazard- if you're in rented accomodation and you have a decent landlord he should ask you to move it. If it's your own house it is obviously your own decision, but just consider- if it catches fire and someone is upstairs, how will they get down....

Yeh it's a big dilema where the hell do I put some on my noisiest machines I was considering having a shed built (I've laid cat5 under the floorboards and to external points) and moving them all outside.

Still I acknowledge your concern and as you are well aware it is the very same reason for me starting this thread as I dont want to be running my machines 24/7 anymore.
