sharing my internet connection

hi everyone! i'm a new poster in the cable forum
i have a question to ask about sharing my telewest broadband with my housemates using a wireless router.

i used to be wanadoo customer, meaning that i used an adsl wireless modem-router D-Link DSL G604T . click on "detailed view" to see the interface of the router.

since i am switching to telewest, i am unsure whether or not i can still use my modem-router. The telewest connection comes with a cable modem. would i be able to use the routing function of my modem/router by connecting the telewest cable modem to one of the four LAN ports? (not the dsl port! the dsl port requires an RJ 11 connector). my thought was to use one of the LAN port as a sort of "upload" line to provide internet access, and the other 3 LAN ports would be the "download" lines, as well as the wireless connection.

Any help or reply would be appreciated! feel free to ask more details about the set-up, or hardware details.

Thanks alot

Unfortunately ADSL modem routers will not work with cable. I'd suggest you ebay it, and instead buy your self just a straight forward stand alone router. If you ever go back to ADSL the router woudl work fine, all you'd have to do is connect and adsl modem to the router.

There's lots of suitable routers out there. Linksys seems especially popular for most CF users, although D-link, and netgeear are also good too.

Re: sharing my internet connection

Welcome to the forum by the way. I hope you enjoy it here and stick around.
ADSL uses a different technology to cable Internet so you would need a Cable router.
If you are not looking for any wireless features and can do with wired cabling around the house, you can get a Linksys BESFR41 router for £30 delivered and this will allow you to share your internet connection.
The router has 4 ports and can be linked to more routers if you ever need to expand your network.

PC's go into the router, and then your cable modem goes into the routers Internet/WAN port.

You can check that router out HERE

For a wireless solution, you may want to try this one out HERE
