Internet access at sea
recently (last week) I was on a ship in the med where "for a small fee you are able to browse the net to your hearts content" . That fee was £3.75 per 15 minutes. Is this excessive and do you think I should write in and compain about it under misrepresentation. You could not work offline and the coonection was slow (like a dial up). It was a bit dissapointing to say the least

Re: Internet access at sea
Expensive, but it's not like they have to provide anyone with internet access.

well in the brochure there was what purported to be an internet cafe - which there in fact was. Usually empty I hasten to add

Re: Internet access at sea
Not surprising it was empty at that price. But your on holiday, you can surely do without the net for that time?
I'd imagine it's a fairly pricey facility just to create, not only of the basic computer kit, but the connection, probably relying on a satellite signal?

yeah - but you'd think they could loss lead it or something if it was, in fact, being offered. I had to do some banking transactions on the trip that could not be avoided

Re: Internet access at sea
Satellite internet is expensive enough on land, so prob costs them a fair bit at sea.

Re: Internet access at sea
IMO, I think its wayy overcharged, if you ask me their are charging in the excessive as they are preying on peoples ideas that it must be a technological miracle to get 'net on a moving ship in the middle of nowhere.

yes that's what I thought. I think I shall put pen to paper and write a stiff letter. In one of my more inebriated moments i chucked a message in a bottle containing my email address overboard, for no apparent or coherent reason, to see if it got a response at some point

Don't they use that Inmarsat thingy on ships?
I know a telephone call using that costs ÃƒÆ’Ã¢â‚¬Å¡Ãƒâ€šÃ‚Â£ÃƒÆ ’‚£Ãà¢â‚¬Å¡Ãƒâ€šÃ‚£Ãƒâ₠¬Å¡Ãƒâ€šÃ‚£Ãƒâ€š £ÂÃ⠀šÃ‚£Ãƒâ€šÃ‚à ƒ‚£Ãƒâ€šÃ‚ £ÃƒÆ’‚£Ã ƒâ€šÃ‚£Ãà ƒ¢â‚¬Å¡Ãƒâ€šÃ‚£Ãƒâââ €š¬Å¡Ãƒâ€šÃ‚£Ãƒâ€Š¡Ãƒâ€šÃ‚£Ãƒâ€šÃ ‚£Ã‚Ãâ€Å ¡Ã‚£Ãƒâ€šÃ‚ £Ãƒâ€šÃ‚£à ƒÆ’‚£s

Re: Internet access at sea
Thats not cheap but if you at sea and you desperately need to use the net, then its a service and they will be charging you a price for this.
I always remember you could also phone from boats before mobiles came into use, and it would swallow your coins extremely fast.
As has been said, sattelite connections cost a lot to use.

What would you have done if they didn't have internet on-board? Not booked the trip?

that's not the point really. It said in the literature "browse to your hearts content at a reasonable cost" and I was wondering if that breached the marketing standards code (or something like that) due to the high nature of that charge

Re: Internet access at sea
£3.75 for 15 minutes may sound expensive but it is quite cheap compared with the cost of using some mobiles overseas. I have an old prepay BTCellnet phone which we originally bought as it gave free calls to a named landline number. If we used that phone overseas it cost £3.00 per minute. Now that is expensive.
