Re: No more free updates for Windows 2000

Blimey, MS are already starting to sunset 2K?

I'd agree with the quote that 'Windows 2000 is still extremely popular in the enterprise. Research company AssetMatrix recently estimated it was still used by almost half of all business desktops.' I know of loads of places that perform testing on 2K3 but don't actually use it in production, and instead rely still on 2K.

Re: No more free updates for Windows 2000

That makes sense.....My employers have only just moved to Win2k as NT was becoming "more difficult, and more expensive" to provide continued support for

Exactly. People are using 2K instead of spending money on licencing (not buying!) XP and that doesn't make Microsoft rich...

Re: No more free updates for Windows 2000

Our customers use all versions of Windows from 95 on up, though we only support Windows 98, 2000 and XP Pro. The latter causes slight problems with our software. Customer servers tend to run Windows 2000 server, though we're moving to Windows 2003 server, with some issues though. Still have the odd NT server customer - nightmare OS. I quite like Windows 2000 - doesn't do anything weird like XP does, and it doesn't keep losing domain authentication, forcing the user to reboot the PC. Methinks it will live on for another 5 years at least.

I'm still using 2000 Pro and I'm going to be sticking with it. No point going to XP if 2000 does the job.

One of our printing press control units runs on dos 6.22 with a touchscreen too......

You try and find drivers for a touchscreen for dos for an elo touch...... what a nightmare!!!

It also runs nicely on machines that would not run XP. I've just upgraded a Celeron 333 with 96Mb of RAM to W2k, works well and far more stable than when on 98.

Re: No more free updates for Windows 2000

In fairness to Microsoft, Win 2000 is nearly six years old (it was first released in 1999). That is ancient by computing standards. For comparison, try getting support from Apple for Mac OSX 10.0, or Mac OS 9..
