Are my MIPS right?

I decided to check my new laptop's performance at www.pcpitstop.com (which I have found helpful in the past).

It told me there were two minor problem's with it: the processor underperformed, and the c drive needed defragging. I did the latter using windows (XP home) defrag), but pcpitstop still complained, so I ran the trial version of O&O, which brought fragmentation down to 5%.

According to the tests, my processor still underperforms compared to similar systems. As far as I can tell by quite a bit:

Quote:
The processor performance of this system, 2468 MIPS (millions of integer operations per second), is significantly lower than similar systems with the same type of processor running at the same clock rate, which perform at 6506 MIPS, on average.
Suggested solutions are to disable unnecessary processes, and to disable power saving options when running on AC.

Disabling any unnecessary processes does not make any difference, and as far as I know, all power saving options have been turned off.

So, is my system underperforming (and if so, what should I do), or is this expected from a laptop, or should I take this whole test with a pinch of salt?

System info:

Acer Aspire 1520
CPU AMD 64 3400+
512 meg RAM
NVIDIA Geforce FX Go 5700 (128 meg)
80 Gig HD

Re: Are my MIPS right?

does it definitely recognse your pc as a laptop? a mobile a64 cpu will perform a lot less well than a desktop one.

Re: Are my MIPS right?

Your MIPS are very low. My Athlon XP 2400+ does at least 3000 MIPS. Although I wouldn't know why it would run that slow on your system

It says that my system looks like it might be a laptop (hence the power management suggestion). It does not say if the comparison is against other laptops though...

Is that a laptop or desktop?

I ran the test a number of times, and occasionally it does go up to 4500, but 2500 seems to be the norm.

Are you sure your hyper transport settings and cpu cache settings are correct in bios? Was the cpu busy doing something else at the time?

Re: Are my MIPS right?

Is the laptop plugged in or running on battery when you run these tests?

Re: Are my MIPS right?

Go into bios and look around for cpu settings, make sure the hyper transport is set to 4x at least and make sure cpu cache is on
Dont change anything till you have checked manual or online what settings are correct for machine
you could reset to defaults and try again

I had a look in the bios, and can't find any options regarding that. Regardless, seeing this laptop is one month old, and this was my first look at the bios, I'd assume the settings are default?

I just noticed, the test takes about an hour...

I had planned to retire earlier...

BTW The machine runs like a dream. It's just when you get reports that similar systems perform much better that you start wondering...

edit: test2 now
