Moving my STB
Can anyone help me. I want to move my STB about 5m to the other side of the room. I know that ntl would come and do it but I can't afford the sort of prices they charge. I need to know what, where and type of cable and fittings I could use and sort of place I can source these items. I live in the Ashford Kent area My STB is a PACE type. Any help gratefully received

Hi Tiger Tank 1,
Please remember that under Section 9.5 of the Terms and Conditions of Residential Customer Service Agreement, you are not allowed to alter the cabling in any way.
Quote:

9.5 Nobody other than our representatives may tamper, add to, modify or interfere with the Equipment in any way. As well as any other rights we may have, such action may result in our suspending the Services, terminating the Agreement and/or our retaining the whole or a part of any deposit. You may be liable to prosecution if you modify, tamper with or dispose of the Equipment without lawful authority. Theft of services is a crime.

Improper cabling can cause issues not only for you, but for other people in your area as well.

Re: Moving my STB
You'll need a length of shielded cable with an F5 plug on both ends.

Re: Moving my STB
Hi TT. You need satellite-grade coaxial cable with f-connectors on either end. You can normally buy this sort of cable ready made up at a store such as Maplin, with luck at just the right length you need. Best to actually replace the existing cable entirely if you can; otherwise, you can add your new length of coax onto the existing one but you will need an extra little widget to make the two f-connectors marry up. Alsoe available at Maplins and very cheap.
Yes, it's technically against the T & Cs, but consider this - when they installed my broadband the tech left me a load of extra cable in case I ever fancied moving the modem somewhere else in the room. So they can't be that worried ...

Re: Moving my STB
have you asked ntl if they will move it for you? They normally charge, but it may be that you get lucky and they will do it for free... surely it is worth a go!

Re: Moving my STB
Just get a suitable length of CT100 type sat cable with connectors - ideally a crimped lead but screw-ons work fine. Replace the whole cable rather than extending.
NTL won't care, and there's no realistic way it will mess things up for other people.

It can "mess" things up, it can put noise onto the network if all connections and cable are not upto code. And noise will affect BB for everyone on the same network as TT as it can slow the speeds down for one.
