Help With Up And Down Speed

This was taked today at 1045 on http://www.adslguide.org.uk/ To me it does not look good, i have the 750 and was told by ntl that the speed UP should be 128kbps. i was geting good speeds in jan ,but now it is down  . what with all the talk about ntl caps, i cant even get what iam paying for  this was my 1st post Help with upstream speeds SNAKEKIL It would be great if some one good help me out. One more thing why dont you like adslguide speeds?

are you sure you have no outbound traffic when you are doing the test  , btw it would have been better to bump your previous thread , rather than creating another , perhaps a mod could merge them both

Don't forget that you are paying for a contended service, a service that is shared with many others. You are paying for a service with speeds of up to 750 kbps downstream and up to 128 kbps upstream. These speeds are not guaranteed and will depend on how your computer is set up, what your computer is doing at the time of the test, what other users on your UBR are doing with their connection, what traffic is going through every router between you and the target site and many other factors. If you look on th adslguide site that you did the speed test on you will see a table of average results from speed tests done on ADSL 512 kbps connections. The top performer at the moment is an ISP called NDO with average downstream rate of 451.6 Kbps and average upstream rate of 234.0 Kbps. No one gets the full maximum speed they are paying for all the time but cable connections tend to be able to get nearer to it than ADSL connections.

i had no outbound traffic whan i did my test. I try to to the test at the same time avery night, by point was that it is getting worse avery frew weeks. ok but what  speeds are guaranteed ? i will post them again at 1730 on mon night.

17:30 = net rush hour
everybody home from school/college/work and starting the email checks or whatever.
you definately wont get true speed results at this time of day
best times 01:00-09:00 (the later the better if using US based tests)

There is no guarunteed speed as has been stated, the only way you will get a guarunteed speed is through purchasing an expensive leased line like (ISDN - Expensive and Slow) (T1 - Expensive but quite fast) Good luck
80-90k/s download on a 750k connection is perfectly reasonable and you shouldnt really expect any more
10k/s upload with overheads and a few other people uploading on your UBR, again perfectly reasonable, and youre lucky, im lucky if my upload approaches 10k/s

You also need to consider any bandwidth throttle by the remote server, particularly at peek times. Although that may not be the case with a test site.
There is no guarantee speed, upload or down, because there are so many local factors to take into cosideration.

Rather than using any online speed test (which is subject to any problems with their server, such as it being overloaded), I would recommend Dan Elwell's downloadable broadband speed test ( http://www.broadbandspeedtest.net/). It's a small program that accesses various well known servers and measures their response times to give you an indication of how fast your connection is. It can also help identify some problems.

I had exactly the same problem and tried everything to get it solved. My downstream was fine, but my upstream would only register 70 - 100 Kbps. I even timed uploads to my webspace which proved that I was only getting speeds in this range. Tech support were unable to help and I was basically told that I could not get an engineer out for a low upload speed.
Then on a subsequent call, the helpful tech asked if I had problems with my STB using interactive to which I replied that I never use it, because it was slow and would crash. He told me to redial tech support and to simply report the interactive fault as an engineer would be sent for this problem.
The engineer diagnosed a faulty box and replaced it and I now get full speed in both directions:
Downstream 702 Kbps (87.8 KB/sec) 758 Kbps (inc. overheads)
Upstream 120 Kbps (15.0 KB/sec) 129 Kbps (inc. overheads)
I found it ironic that an engineer could not be sent for a poor upload speed, but the second a fault is reported with interactive, an engineer can call. To be fair, this was 6 months ago, so procedures may have changed since. I don't know if you are using a STB, but if you are, check your interactive!

Just because you don't get your full whack of upstream doesn't mean that there is a fault. You are using a contended service where upstream is a much scarcer commodity than downstream and several users on a UBR card that are hammering their upstream can result in less than maximum being possible.
