why can't I tune in new telly

Hi All,
I have just excitedly bought myself a Sony 42 RPT (only to be told by a mate it won't be hdtv compatible..great!) Anyway, problem is I can't seem to tune it in to the Jarrold stb like I did on my old Sony CRT; I used to switch TV channel to 7, then change cable channels with the cable remote control. Now the newTV tunes itself into the cable channels (some very fuzzy) and changing the Jarrold stb channels does'nt do anything. Also when channel searching I come across a screen that looks like a pc showing some sort of graph?
Hope somebody can help make sense of this? (fingers crossed)
Thanks in advance,
Andy
ps. stb uses aerial connector, not scart.

a cable connection will only show as one 'channel', it may show as a different number, depending on the kit - on my tv card it is channel 98, on my dvd/vhs player it is channel 74, for example

Andypull may have analogue channels being supplied either by aerial or by bypass from the cable. If this is the case then he would get channels 1-5 on those selections on the TV and cable on channel 7 as before. If nothing has been changed on the STB then it is a tuning problem with the new TV or a flylead problem.

Is there not a manual tune facility on your tv ?
Depending on your area the analogue box should be somewhere inbetween tuning channel 50 -60 . I think your tv is picking up the ghost channels with auto tune. It needs to be manually tuned .

It sounds like you have bypassed the cable box somehow, the symptoms you are reporting are those that you would experience if you plugged the cable feed directly into a TV, might be worth a call to support to make sure your box has gone bang!

didnt those anolouge boxes pass though the signals or something as well as descrambleing the channels which you are subscribed to?

i swear ages ago when i tuned someone tv in it picked up channels like qvc and some other Free to air channels off the cable feed even though the box was on some other channel.

guess you must have a hyberband tuner than can tune into the higher frequances the cable uses ... i think my portable can best to leave the box connected though probably need it there to descramble the payed channels..

also it probably has something in the box to stop you sending ingress back into ntls network
