Someone has posted a message on my website guest book advertising something a little unsavoury and I don't know how to get rid of it! I can erase ALL messages by removing the page, but I don't want to do that.
Is it a guestbook you wrote from scratch or one that is hosted by a guestbook service??
Could post the link to the site in question and someone might be able to look and tell you how to remove the spam.

It was one I automatically created in Frontpage 2003 using a template.
Have you looked in the webspace that all your html pages are loaded into for your site to see if there is a text file for the guestbook, I think you have to just open the file that is created by the guestbook and then edit out the entries you don't want.
The file in question may be a log file.

Yes. I've got the website access from within FP but I can only PREVIEW the page, not edit it. It won't let me!
Are you trying to remotely edit it or have you copied the file in question back to your pc for editting? You should be able to FTP the file back to your pc, edit it and then upload it back to your webspace.
