Hotmail & Gmail with Thunderbird?

I think it is about time I switched to Thunderbird, but I want to check my Hotmail and Gmail accounts through it, otherwise i'll be stuck using OE forever.

Does anyone have any recommendations for software? HotmailPopper is no longer free, and I am about to try MrPostman which looks alright. I am hoping to find a program that will do both Hotmail and Gmail in one. There are a lot of different apps now, finding the right/best one can be a bit exhausting.

Can anyone recommend anything to do that?

Re: Hotmail & Gmail with Thunderbird?

Mr Postman always seems to work with me and thunderbird with my hotmail accounts.

I haven't got round to sorting out Gmail yet as I normally check that in work anyway.

Seeing Microsoft are going to block Outlook Express using hotmail from next year anyway they'll probably block most of the third party add-ons at that time as well, so you might be stuck to checking it in Firefox anyway.

That looks much more like an "all" that a "most". I imagine they'd block the interface Outlook Express uses entirely (I used to find it very flakey anyway so stopped using it years ago) for non-paying customers.

Maybe some sort of addon that manipulates the web page as though through a web browser but seamlessly through the thunderbird interface ?

Re: Hotmail & Gmail with Thunderbird?

How do you change the POP port to 1110? I cant see a port text box in the server settings?

Hotmail Popper can be free, with a c*ack...

How about FreePOPs for Gmail (freepops.sourceforge.net), that's what I use...

Are you using OE or Thunderbird?

In Outlook Express you need to setup a new account using POP3 and localhost as the incoming mail server. Then after you have completed that go back in and change the server port on the advanced tab.

Thunderbird is similar but once it's created there should be options below the main section of the account to add/change the port.

TB. It is supposed to be in the "Server Settings" section, but it isn't there (see screenshot).

I have been through all the others, and I can't see it. The only port I can see is in the outgoing section.

Is there a hidden way to turn advanced options on or something?

Oh, and it is XP, although it looks like OSX, it is just a theme.

Re: Hotmail & Gmail with Thunderbird?

Very strange. This is how mine is set up.

What version of Thunderbird are you using? This is from 0.9

Have you tried it without using the theme? Thats the only other thing I can think of.

Re: Hotmail & Gmail with Thunderbird?

Bizarre..... I was using 0.8 (which according to them is the latest version). I came across version 0.9 somewhere on their site, but the Server Settings page didn't change.

Weird.... I will try removing it entirely and installing it again

Well done mate, you were right. God knows why, but I switched back to Windows Classic and lo and behold it the port box appeared.
