Newbie alert and some advice please!

Hi,

I've had a Pace stb installed for about a month now and I can't seem to get the normal channels through it (especially ITV1). It just comes up with a blank screen - has anyone else noticed this or had problems?

I used to use "Teletext" a lot too, but can't anymore - am I doing something wrong?

Sorry to be a pain ...

Re: Newbie alert and some advice please!

Teletext does not come through on digital (mostly), so if you are viewing ITV1 on your cable channel (6) or AV1, then it will not be there.

Can you see ITV1 on Channel 3 as you used to?

Hi and to CF and your not a pain Your NTL STB should be able to give you all the standard terrestrial channels from all around the UK, also if you had an original Arial this could also be fixed into the STB and would give you the normal channels as before from your local transmitter (handy when NTL goes down) I would give customer services a call on 151 and choose faults and sound them out. Regarding Teletext this will not work via the STB itâ₠¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢s now called interactive that works when it wants to. Teletext will go the same way as H band TV.

Thats cool but in my kneck of the woods I was told just that by NTL faults as I also used to use Teletext but now I only get "no text available". Iâ₠¬ÃƒÆ’¢â€žÂ¢m prepared to eat my hat so to speak, so do we have any techs that will be able to confirm that Teletext is available via a digital STB?
I think itâ₠¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢s something to do with the top few lines on a terrestrial TV that transmits the Teletext data is now used to give a wide screen digital picture ??? UK Gold does not transmit in 1:9

The good thing about CF is we can all help each other.

Teletext is not carried on the Digital Platform for any of the terrestrial channels this is not an NTL decision it is down to the channel provider.

Some channels do carry a basic text service but again this is down to the channel provider.

While we are on the subject of teletext, the 'Teletext' service on Interactive will no longer be available soon, this is down to Teletext themselves withdrawing the content this is happening on Sky, NTL and Telewest Interactive services and is entirely Teletexts decision.

Re: Newbie alert and some advice please!

The only thing teletext and widescreen issues have in common is that they both encode information in the "invisible" lines at the top of the screen (although your TV is more likely to pay attention the pin 8 on the scart lead than it is to line 23 of the video signal).

Teletext on digital is an interesting challenge. Teletext signals can't be done as they are on an analogue broadcast -- included by the provider as part of the video signal -- as the MPEG encoding process turns the top lines into garbage. What happens is that when the MPEG encoding takes place, the teletext data is stripped off and sent as a datastream side-by-side with the video. The STB then receives and decodes this data at the same time as the video stream, and reinserts the teletext data in the top couple of dozen lines of the picture. Of course, this has to be tightly synchronised with the original picture, for things like subtitles.

At the moment, how well your box does teletext is a matter of the hardware and software. Presumably L3.2 is better than B3.1, but I don't know for sure. On the Bromley side, I think the older chipset boxes (1000 and 2000) are better than the new ones, but that could be subjective. As always, Spiderplant is the man who knows...

So I can keep my hat, but what about the original post from Nicola not being able to get ITV?? I think she is hitting the 3 button on her TV remote and the install team have not pluged the Arial into the STB, but she should be able to view BBC, ITV etc via the digi box via av1??

UK Gold has it, Paramount has it, but ITV and BBC don't.
Looking up this thread the business / technical reasons are detailed.
Subtitles come from a different part of the digital stream thesedays, not 888.

Re: Newbie alert and some advice please!

Page 888 subtitles are present on quite a few channels (the Sky, Disney and UKTV ones mostly), and also teletext magazines on various channels. But as Tristan suggests, you probably won't be able to see them if you have any of the following STB models: 4000, 4010, 4001HW0 and 4001HW1. After the next software update, the problems should be fixed.

Nicola: can you explain more about how you are trying to view ITV and teletext, and I'm sure someone can help?
