Strange Email Problem

I have been experiencing a strange problem with my emails over the last couple of days. I have 4 ntlworld email addresses and 3 of them are ok. However, the one I use for all my important emails doesn't seem to be functioning properly. I recieved an email from my webhosting company on Monday at 09:26am and since then I have recieved an additional 8 exact copies of the same email. I initially thought that it may have been a problem with my webhosts mail server but now it's taking well over a minute to check that particular mailbox. Everytime I check my emails, it downloads another copy of the same email and then times out. I've also tried emailing this ntlworld mailbox from my Hotmail account but so far, the email hasn't turned up. However, like I say, my other 3 addresses are working fine.

I know there is some maintenance going on at the moment, but it should apparently only affect users between midnight and 6am. I was just wondering if anyone has in the past, or is currently experiencing similar problems. I just find it wierd considering all the addresses are on the same account and they were all created at the same time.

Thanks

DrT

welcome to the weird world of ntl. I don't know why you are having this problem, but it doesn't surprise me!! LOL! If you resolve this, post how you did it. It might help others in the future.

Re: Strange Email Problem

Sounds like there is a problem with that e-mail which is causing your mail client to throw a wobbly - it should download the e-mail and then delete it - but it sounds like it is downloading it and then failing before deleting it (or downloading anything else) - therefore the mail will be there to be fetched again (and again) and you can't get anything queued up after it.

You could try logging into your account via webmail and deleting the offending e-mail.

Re: Strange Email Problem

Alternatively it could be the mail is getting stuck somewhere on the server and failing to delete.

You could then try this -

Telnet it and bin it completely.

To telnet it try the following -

To telnet the mail server:
Click onto Start then Run
type telnet pop.ntlworld.com 110 - press enter
+OK InterMail POP3 server ready.
type user then a space then your user.name - press enter
+OK please send PASS command
type pass then a space then your password - press enter
+OK user.name is welcome here

This logs you into the pop server.

type list.

Identify the mail you think is causing the problem and type DELE 1 or whichever number corresponds.

Then type quit to close the telnet connection.

That should then bin the offending mail.

Go back to outlook express and try redownloading send/receive.

Hopefully then no more duplicate mails.

Re: Strange Email Problem

Thanks for all your replies. I tried logging into Webmail to see if I could access my email account but unfortunately, it wouldn't let me in. However, I tried again this morning and it let me in. In my mailbox, there was one copy of the email I kept recieving and a long list of emails I have been waiting for that had failed to come through. I deleted the duplicated email and all the emails that were queued up came straight through in Outlook. Sounds like you were spot on Paul. Thanks again
