Cambridge Problems?
Anyone having problems with sites, messengers and more this afternoon in our area? I can't connect to any of the following: MSN Messenger, iChat, AIM, microsoft.com and various other sites.
I can get on yahoo messenger and other sites, but it seems like hardly anything is working right?

Re: Cambridge Problems?
oh and if it makes any difference the only errors I can find connection wise is when i try to connect to AIM (The connection to the host was unexpectedily lost) Seems like an NTL problem as other people who are not using NTL here are on there fine.

Re: Cambridge Problems?
There is something seriously amiss. I pop out for a couple of hours and come home to find no email, ftp, or browser access to anything outside the UK.
This is not good -
Code:
Tracing route to microsoft.com [207.46.130.108]
over a maximum of 30 hops:
1 1 ms <1 ms <1 ms air.setup [192.168.11.1]
2 7 ms 7 ms 7 ms 10.140.207.254
3 9 ms 8 ms 9 ms lutn-t2cam1-a-v119.inet.ntl.com [80.
4 7 ms 7 ms 8 ms lutn-t2core-a-ge-wan63.inet.ntl.com
85]
5 20 ms 13 ms 9 ms pop-bb-a-so-300-0.inet.ntl.com [62.2
6 9 ms 9 ms 10 ms so-7-0.hsa2.London1.Level3.net [212.
7 * 212.187.131.125 reports: Destination net unreachable.

Re: Cambridge Problems?
I am in the Cambridge area and I am also having connection problems, I notice the problems usually when gaming due to the packetloss I get. Shown below is a traceroute I did earlier today:
C:\Documents and Settings\Adam Armstrong>tracert www.ntlworld.com
Tracing route to www.ntlworld.com [62.253.162.30]
over a maximum of 30 hops:
1 20 ms 8 ms 10 ms 172.30.79.254
2 9 ms 10 ms 8 ms cmbg-t2cam1-b-ge92.inet.ntl.com [80.1.202.129]
3 134 ms * 7 ms cmbg-t2core-b-ge-wan61.inet.ntl.com [80.1.201.153]
4 7 ms 8 ms 9 ms nth-bb-b-so-210-0.inet.ntl.com [62.253.188.197]
5 9 ms 8 ms 8 ms nth-bb-a-ae0-0.inet.ntl.com [62.253.185.117]
6 12 ms 15 ms * gfd-bb-b-so-400-0.inet.ntl.com [62.253.185.98]
7 * 12 ms 16 ms win-bb-a-so-500-0.inet.ntl.com [213.105.172.129]
8 15 ms 14 ms 15 ms win-dc-a-v902.inet.ntl.com [62.253.187.222]
9 15 ms 14 ms 12 ms www.ntlworld.com [62.253.162.30]
Trace complete.
Which doesn't seem to be too good, also I did a traffic report on my UBR using DOCSIS:
UBR ***.**.**.*** at 2004 Jun 25, 18:55
Channel...Freq.....Max..Usage....Users..Min..Ave.. Max
...............MHz.....kbps...kbps................ .ms....ms....ms
Dnstr 3..402.75..30342..21431...1013...15.....46...469

Upstr 6...18.4.......5120........94..........8...15...31 .....47
Note: timings include one hop on your up/downstream
and at least one on target up/downstream.
I dont know is this shows much really, but I dont think the upstreams should have over 200 users on.
This has been going on for about 5 weeks now, and all tech support say is wait till Tuesday next week cos thats when network rebalancing takes place. Hmmm 5 Tuesdays later and it looks like the balancing didnt balance :P

Upstreams aren't necessarily the same size all over, they can vary! 200 users is quite acceptable for a double width 5.12Mbit upstream, especially if it's in an area where relatively little upstream is used. Number of modems isn't the issue, utilisation is.
For what it's worth I see nothing there that will cause packet loss, nor do I see any evidence of it as all packets sent to ntlworld.com got there, and back, no problem. If some of the routers in between aren't answering all the pings that's not a fault!
I take your point about balancing though, please give me your IP address so that I can check this out - DOCSDIAG is not as accurate as one would wish, and what it says shouldn't be taken as gospel. More to the point it adds to load on upstreams as it sends traffic to each and every modem, and loads of empty IPs too, causing extra load on the uBR...

Looks like a fault with level3, one of ntl's transit providers. As you can see this occurs after the packets have left the ntl network so isn't really under ntl's control

Hi JustAnotherN00b,
Thanks for the quick resonse to my post, so the *'s on the traceroute are normal then, just a UBR doing something more important . How shall I send you my IP address.

Private message please - I'll also check your modem out - the *s are usually caused by the receiving routers, however one of them there is a bit of a concern.
