Different Domain in Windows XP
Is it possible to be able to logon to several domains in Windows XP without having to change it in the settings menu.
On my Windows 98 machine I can specify which I logon to, but recently we have got some XP machines and I can only logon to one domain.
Can anyone help.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Different Domain in Windows XP
Think you can on Pro but not on home, do you have the home variant?

Re: Different Domain in Windows XP
NT/2K/XP all give you the choice of every domain they can find on the network (except XP Home I think).

Re: Different Domain in Windows XP
They should let you log onto any if you put DOMAIN\username, right?
Or am I totally wrong here? :pp

Not sure - the domains are in a dropdown list and you just put the uername in a text box - I don't think you can use the domain prefix method to overide the dropdown list - I'm sure I have tried this in the past and it failed.
In XP home you don't get a box to enter your name - just a list of users with a button to click.

Re: Different Domain in Windows XP
'home' doesnt DO domains, the others need to be able to see a Domain controller ( of whatever sort, AD or trad) to populate their domain list with the available choices.

Re: Different Domain in Windows XP
In the drop down list how can you have say 2 or 3 different domains? The point that I am getting to it that I want to be able to logon to several at different times without having to go into the settings.
All that is in the drop down list is the computer on its own and one of the domain I log into. I wanto 2 or more domains in that list.

Re: Different Domain in Windows XP
If a computer account has been created in the domain you wish to log on to then all you'll have to do is type the domain name into the drop down list box.
For example:
Say your computer is already configured to log into a domain called alpha but you want to log into a domain called beta.
Assuming a computer account for your computer PC1 hasn't been created in beta, then you need to create it first.
This can either be done through the AD users and computers MMC from a machine in the beta domain.
Or, if you have sufficient rights, you can log into PC1 either locally or via alpha and go into the settings and add it to the beta domain.
I'm not sure, but if you're a domain admin, you may just be able to type in beta as the domain on PC1 at the logon screen, and it may then create the computer account in the domain for you.
Once a computer account has been made in the domain beta, you'll be able to log into either.
Your profiles will be seperate, one being c:\Documents and Settings\username and the other being c:\Documents and Settings\username.beta (unless you have a local account with the same username, in which case the alpha profile would be username.alpha, although if the local username account has been made after a domain username account has been logged into the profile will be username.PC1)

Which means your computer cannot "see" those missing domains when it compiles its list - this is possibly because the machine is "in" the domain you can see - and that domain has no trust relationship with the other domains.

Re: Different Domain in Windows XP
AFAIK domain\username in the logon field will not work (But does on the change password screen so no need to log onto a new domain to change your password)
In order to get domains in the browse list you could force the entries through in the LMHOSTS file to preload into Cache otherwise a WINS (or is it DNS) server can provide a list of domains.
XP when starting its network will also do a search for domains as the XP machine attempts to become a master browser on the network!
