Have you tried installing it to a different SQL Database?

remove the entire table in the database indicated in the error and re-run the install script.

You said you'd "cleared" the tables, I misunderstood, I thought you'd just emptied the tables, not deleted them. This might sound a bit stupid, but are the scripts pointing to the right database?

IMO, you're probably better off with Invision board because it's faster and more secure.

I agree very much, have not used phpBB for some time now, IB is also more powerful with almost all the features of the King! (no not Elvis, vBulletin)

I have to say use InvisionBoard as I found it dead easy to set up. The only problem I have is when the linux box reboots, it says mysql starts up but I still find i have to do /etc/init.d/mysqld start to actually see the forums starting.

Delete the entire thing from the FTP, and re-upload everything..Rename the directory you upload to, to "/forums", as well.

You need to remove all phpbb_ tables from the database then re-run the installer like someone said.
phpbb is pretty good in my book. phpbb2 plus is good aswell, kinda like phpnuke with lots of extra functionality. Just changing our guild site around to that, will post it when its up incase anyone is interested.

In my opinion phpbbfm is even better and is more configuable than any board i have ever seen and a dream to use i have a few sites up now using this and would not use any other.
The only drawback is that it will only install with mysql.
Getting back to the problem you can of course use a different prefix on the database ie when running the install script in the field where it says prefix you can specify phpbb2_ instead of the standard phpBB_

You need to log in to the host's sql database management system and delete the existing tables.
Roger K ... you ever hacked the code of Invasion Board? It's sh**!
