Watched this last night and what is your intepretation of the film?
I think that "Frank" has travelled back in time to warn him of the end of world, when it is in fact the end of the world for Donnie and he tells him to do those things so that the time line can be reset so he dies when the jet engine falls on his house.
So really I don't think Donnie was going mad. It was just that no one believed him until his therapist beleived him towards the end.
It was great when they all woke up at the end of the film believing they had just had a nightmare.
