Virgin Media Won't connect to multiple Pc's
Hi there,
I have 20mb Broadband with Virgin Media....
It's come with disk and everything runs fine if i directly plug my computer into the modem.
But when i put a lead from the modem to router (tried two routers. net gear ds104 and us robotics 8000) Only the computer that i connected with first works.
For example if i plug the modem in first slot then pc1 in second slot then pc2 in third slot only pc1 would work...
If i swap the pc1 and pc2 leads around only pc2 works....
Same error with both routers.
Any Ideas?
Btw its NTL:250 Modem.
Thanks JayRee
Edit: Theres no certain leads or anything you need to go from router > modem ?

Re: Virgin Media Won't connect to multiple Pc's
DS104 is a hub I think, not a full-blown router so that's never going to work.

Re: Virgin Media Won't connect to multiple Pc's
to CF
1. The netgear ds104 appears to be just a hub, not a broadband router. It can't be used for sharing VM cable.
2. The USR 8000 does appear to be a broadband router. When you say "i plug the modem in first slot" what do you mean? The router has five ethernet ports on the back - the modem must be plugged into the one labelled "WAN" ( Pic of USR 8001)
Try the following -
Turn off (unplug) all PC's, USR router and modem.
Connect rj45 cable from modem to WAN port of router.
Connect rj45 cable from Port 1 of router to PC1, Port 2 to PC2.
Turn on modem and wait 30 secs.
Turn on router and wait 30 secs.
Turn on both PC's.
See whether the second PC can connect to the internet.

Re: Virgin Media Won't connect to multiple Pc's
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/...ct/usr8000.gif
Heres the picture of what i have on the front...
I have only WAN on back and printer and com.
from left to right in the picture i have
Modem > PC1 > PC2 > Slot > Slot
Have tried with Modem > Slot > PC1 > PC2 > Slot.
So theres no certain cable from modem to router? Just a normal ethernet one.
Thx for help guys appreciated much.
Edit: Slots are named this
Uplink / 1 / 2 / 3 / 4
....|_or_|

Re: Virgin Media Won't connect to multiple Pc's
the US Robotics do you have a WAN port on there? if not then it looks like you have 2 switches.
between modem and router its just a standard cat5 cable. nothing fancy bout it needed.

Re: Virgin Media Won't connect to multiple Pc's
Yes theres a WAN port on the back.
Theres no switch on the router it's self.
So it's not a rj45 from cable to modem?
Edit: Can this be made? I have a cable making kit.

Re: Virgin Media Won't connect to multiple Pc's
Jree... RJ45 and CAT5E are the same cable.
what you do is connect the virgin modem to the router on the WAN port.
okay another thing, have the vm modem disconnected from the power when you do this and leave it like that for 5 mins, then connect everything and normally it should be a case of BOB IS YOUR UNCLE.

the most obvious is your second rj45 cable is infact a cross over/xover cable and the router being old/cheap doesnt have rj45 auto (xover/straight)switching capability.
take both ends, put them together, and look at the colour sequence from left to right.
are they both exactly the same ,its a straight through rj45 cable.
are two of the colours swaped over, its an xOver cable.
replace the xOver for a straight through, it should work.

"Theres no switch on the router it's self"
those 4 ports are infact the switch, its the same on all routers, the routing is infact done by software inside and the SOC (SystemOnaChip) on the board just routes to those switch ports.

Ill try that after i try what doco said
---------- Post added at 11:46 ---------- Previous post was at 11:33 ----------
okay doco's never worked. And all the ends of all the wires im using are the same.
Any other ideas?
Is the router f***** or something?
JRee
---------- Post added at 11:48 ---------- Previous post was at 11:46 ----------
Also when i installed the disc (virgin media disc) i installed it when each computer was directly connected to the modem (it wouldnt do it any other way) is this okay?
---------- Post added at 11:53 ---------- Previous post was at 11:48 ----------
And if it is the router thats knackered. What router do you recomend me buying?
---------- Post added at 12:11 ---------- Previous post was at 11:53 ----------
Okay now pc2 won't connect to the virgin in any slot or directly to the modem... it says on screen. Limited or no connection ...

Re: Virgin Media Won't connect to multiple Pc's
bad router, bad rj45 cable, bad OS settings are all possible.
as for a router, wireless or wired, take a look at this thread for a good URL and perhaps better future proofing your network.
http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/87...l#post34465076
if your going to buy new anyway, might as well get the fastest and latest spec, that being 11N 100megabit+ real throughput wireless and 1gigabit wired routers.
it seems the belkin N router is sometimes OK and sometimes not,NOTE THERE IS a driver problem with its matching USB 11N wireless card just now,so keep that in mind, and perhaps get the matching cardbus or PCi card instead if you chose that route.
remember, listen to advice, chose a device, DO A SEARCH for any and all info as regards problems With it BEFORE YOU PAY OUT.... be happy.

Re: Virgin Media Won't connect to multiple Pc's
So do you think its fixable, will most probably look into getting a new one when i get cash.
I dont think its cable problems.
Router maybe (but pc1 works fine in all slots)
OS could be. as i stated before im rubbish with networking so i wouldn't know what to do on the computer its self ...

Re: Virgin Media Won't connect to multiple Pc's
you can rule out bad OS settings by temp booting a LiveCD such as slax if your PC has generic ethernet parts or a wireless card that doesnt need its cold boot firmware HD loaded at boot time usually.
slax has worked for me as a testing CD many a time, go get a copy ,burn it and boot it on your bad PC and see if it then works fine.
im not sure how you can rule out a not bad rj45 cable if you cant get it to work on another working PC though.
they are cheap £5 or less for a very long 20 meter or there abouts in any small PC shop, so go get one or find one elswere off the friend or something, and test your suspect rj45 cable on someones working kit if you can.
