Connection drops (Due to DNS lookup on 2nd PC?)

Greetings all from a Newbie.
I wonder if anyone can help with my constant dropped connection please?

PC1 - Connected to NTL 200 BB modem via ethernet cable - stable solid 4MB connection, shows 3.9Mb downloads via speedtest.net
Runs Windows XP Pro, ZoneAlarm, Proxy+ and has a wireless LAN card.

PC1 connects to PC2 over an ad-hoc wireless network - very solid connection which starts up automatically on PC2 bootup.

PC2 - connects to internet over wireless network, via proxy+ on PC1 - all proxy settings set as required in Proxy+

PC1 is happy as anything and I can surf for days on end with no connection problems. PC2 will connect immediately (via wireless and proxy+) to the Internet and is able to access web, msn, etc no problems, for a random amount of time, until suddenly I get a 'cant connect error' and connection dies for both PCs. Checking ipconfig on PC1 shows loss of gateway. Wireless network is still connected and works fine.

Anyone have a clue why? Both BroadBand and PC helplines at NTL were of no use - neither could grasp the concept of proxy server software and told me to buy a router or use ICS - which frankly is just a built-in proxy server anyway! Is this a DNS problem? If so why would it kill the gateway?

So many questions and possibilities ... Glad of any pointers that you may have.

Re: Connection drops (Due to DNS lookup on 2nd PC?)

Does pc1 get the same ip address when connection returns or is it changing?

O and welcome to the forum

Re: Connection drops (Due to DNS lookup on 2nd PC?)

Hi, thanks for the welcome and speedy reply.
Answer to your Q: It gets the same IP address on reconnection - which I do by powering down the modem, waiting 10-15secs and back up again.

Re: Connection drops (Due to DNS lookup on 2nd PC?)

What proxy software are you using? Are there any logs on the PC1 that might indicate what crashes?

Could there be another firewall or antivirus conflict?

Surely having just one thread is sufficient, and less confusing?

Re: Connection drops (Due to DNS lookup on 2nd PC?)

This proxie + your using just had a quick look at the guide for it it states it has a firewall is that right?,if so have you tried disabling it.

Not had any dealings with the set up you have,I am sure someone here can point you in the right direction though.

Re: Connection drops (Due to DNS lookup on 2nd PC?)

Yes, apologies. I spotted a sticky saying network questions should be in the forum above after I had posted here. I'll check up and post on the other thread from now on. Cheers ...

Re: Dropped Connection (due to 2nd PC on n/w)

Proxy+ from http://www.proxyplus.cz/

Not really a firewall as such,

And it works just fine, I get successful connection and web browsing for a random amount of time.

Log from proxy+ shows DNS problem ...
