Two independant NTL lines in one household?

Hello. My son has a NTL 2Mb line in our house. I am using a BTbroadband at the moment.
Now I would like to damp BT and move to cable NTL 1 Mb.
Just wonder if it is possible to have two separate and independent NTL lines for one houshold? Thanks

yes, it is (or certainly was 6 months ago) possible - i had 2 x 2Mbit.

Welcome to the site - and yes it is possible to have 2 seperate ntl phone lines in one house - I've had it myself in the past

It can be done, but you may have to use your powers of persuasion on ntl sales as it's not a standard request so they need to look further than their normal screens.

You will need to have the accounts in different names, of course satisfying the ntl rules that both account holders are independent and are in fact separate households and both over 18.

It might be an easier and cheaper solution to upgrade the account to the (up to) 10 meg speed, and introduce a router so you both share the one connection.

Actually it's quite a common request for two broadband conx in the same house, can't see any problem with it at all

but it might be a better bet to get the router option instead so you're just shelling out for one bb

Why pay twice? unless both will be maxed out ie p2p etc, persuade your son to let you connect a router to his cable modem and bingo. What are kids for?

I had thought about a router, but my son is a very heavy gamer and if anything happens... some congestion... who is to blame?

So I think I would go for a separate option... Though the idea about 10 MBit sounds very attractive... Have to think hard.

You can have another line installed no problems, I had one installed a few months ago all you do is phone NTL C.S they tell you that you might have to open another account in your wifes name because you can't have 2 broadband accounts for the same house.

Just my 2 cents, but please do not think by getting 10 meg would be better for his games and you using the router method. The speed is attractive, but I have had 1,2,3 and 10 meg - all off which appear to be the same on all the on-line games I play. (ping around 25)

Having said that, I am a hardcore gamer, and share my connection with my g/f. She dosnt do any hardcore downloading, just chatting to friends on msn so my gaming dosnt suffer. If you intend to rape the bandwidth then I would suggest a dedicated line for yourself.

And also RE: 10 Meg, it is capped to 75gig (which may seem high but when the speed's there it can disappear rather fast) whereas the 1 and 2MBit speeds are uncapped but a little slower. It all depends on what you plan to use the connection for.

If you use netlimiter on whatever software you use to download whatever it is you download and keep this well below ie 5 meg on 10 meg and limit upload to say 128 I cant see any problems.I regularly run 2 or sometimes 3 pcs off my 10 meg and game way happily for hours

Rather than give NTL ÃƒÆ’Ã†â€™ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â€šÂ¬Ã…Â¡ÃƒÆ’Ã¢â‚¬Å¡Ãƒâ€šÃ‚Â£x a month ad-infinitum.. why not.. just buy a router and see how it goes. Make sure the router has a QOS option but dont worry about using it at this stage - Get some recommendations on the choice of router though, it'll save work later on . (QOS is just a feature so that certain types of traffice can have priority over others)

If that doesnt work out pay/bribe someone that knows a bit about networks to enable the QOS feature so his gaming stuff gets priority.

If that doesn't work, then get 2nd NTL line and optionally sell router on ebay.
