Router advice
I have a linksys wrt54gsv connected to my main pc via a wired connection, I also use my pda to connect wirelessly to the internet. My question is: do I connect my ageing win 98 machine via usb wireless adapter or a pci adapter?
I have tried a couple of usb adapters, and found them a bit hit and miss. One day It will connect OK then after a reboot nothing. BTW it only has usb 1.

Either. The PCI probably better though if you're capable of fitting it.

You'd probably be better off with a PCI adapter. This will also free up your USB port

And the PCI will not use CPU resource in the same way so should not slow an aging PC down further.

Definitely go for an PCI card. USB uses general resources of your PC, i.e. processor, software etc, taking it away from other activities, like processing the internet stuff for display. You describe your PC as aging, that implies the processor memory etc will have limited spare capacity. Since a PCI card will have it's onboard stuff you won't nick that power for the wireless.
When you do eventually replace the PC, it probably wouldn't be wireless inbuilt (unlike laptops). Thus you'll still be able to swap the PCI card into the new PC, so it won't be a waste of cash.

I would see if you can get one with, or see if you can add to the purchase a way of remotely placing the aerial (an extension lead) so it does not sit right out of the back of the PC, the metal caseings do nothing for wireless network signals.

I am trying a belkin usb at the moment, decent signal ( high 70's) but after a reeboot I cannot connect to internet or network, although signal is still strong?
