512k'ers there is hope

I have been in touch with ntl regarding my downgrade to 512k a few months ago, a few minutes ago my CM rebooted and when it came back on, guess what, I have been bumped up to 10MB. This is the latest reply I got from ntl via repsonsetek:

"Thank you for your reply. As we have recently changed the details of our broadband again (to a more favourable standing), we have put your broadband back onto the higher level of service. This will give you a 10Mb speed with a 75GB download limit, with this new option if you go over the limit we will put you down to the 1Mb speed but will only be for the remainder of the month that you have gone over. We trust that this will resolve your issue.

I actually wanted to go on the 2MB unlimited service so will contact them again and ask for a downgrade.

Finally, my faith is restored.

Wow! I didn't realise NTL did a 2MB unlimited download! I learn something new every day.

The 1Mb and 2Mb services will be uncapped now until they're upgraded to 10Mb.

is that what they do if you go over your cap on 10mbit? put you down to 1mbit for the rest of the month

If this was to happen instead of the mentioned 128kbit it would make the top tier just a tad more viable to the consumer.

It all sounds fair to me, what if i lived on a street full of bandwidth hogs, i wouldnt like it and niether would most of you,

I think you might be wrong there

1 and 2 meg will remain unlimited.

And then there will be different levels of usage for 10 meg.

The following is a guesstimate

something like :-

17.99 = 15gig
24.99 = 30 gig
34.00 = 75 gig

All of these at 10 meg

Then you will still have the unlimited options as well.

Again this is a guesstimate based on my understanding of the way NTL work and is not based on any information from when i was working for them.

what i really want to know is if what hte orignal poster said about it dropping to 1mbit if you go over the cap on the 10...

that would seem reasonable if it does that as 1mbit is a resonable speed to be dropped to....

Indeed that would make 10 meg 75 gig bearable.

That would make sense as I've noticed a lot of ads on TV for unlimited providers at the lower speeds lately (especially Tiscali), so this would keep NTL competitive with them at the lower speeds.

I think I'd prefer to stay on 2mb with no cap, as it seems fast enough to me, plus a lot of people seem to be having erratic service since the 10mb upgrade, where my 2mb is very reliable.

I hope they give you the option to stay as you are when they come to roll the upgrade out nationwide, and don't just upgrade you to 10mb capped automatically.

It does appear that the bad boys are being given a bit of forgiveness. A friend of mine was put down to 512k last October. This month, when the unlimited options came out, he contacted NTL and asked the advisor why he was paying £17.99 for 512k when 1mb was the same price. She got her supervisor who then put him back onto 2mb.

i can live with that, 75gigs then down to 1meg if i go over for remainder of the month. In fact thats a excellent way of doing things as 75gigs normally last me 3 weeks so the last week at 1meg wouldn't really be a issue.

Thats much more sensible if true, 128k would have been ridiculous and driven everyone to 2 meg unlimited which would cost less, yet consume more.

Remember that this is for when the proper usage monitoring is enabled, not the current situation, what is happening atm is no guide to the future.
