Odd behaviour/Dropping connection

Morning,

ntl:home100
10/3mb service
Huddersfield Area

Over the last few weeks my connection has been randomly disconnecting.

This can require several attempts to reboot the modem and/or PC to reconnect. Then it can be stable for either 10 hours or 30 seconds or anywhere inbetween. There's no specific time of the day when this occurs and it's pot-luck as to whether the next page I click on will load or whether i'll have to re-boot.

Any ideas?

I suspect your modem can't support the fastest 10mb service speeds and something is corrupting. I'd give faults a call and see what they have to say.

Re: Odd behaviour/Droppiong connection

Thanks for quick reply Rob, I tried that but they say everything is hunky-dory at their end. I suggested to them that if that was the case does that not imply that the hardware itself is faulty. I think they suspected I was trying to get my modem upgraded and fobbed me off with 'performing more tests' and saying they'd call me back. They didn't and I thought i'd try here before subjecting myself to that hold music for the next couple of hours.

Re: Odd behaviour/Droppiong connection

I have the same problem dude. Ntl Home 100

My connection cuts out for a few seconds then kicks back in. Why didnt ntl upgrade all their customers to the 250 modem? If they new the older modems wouldnt work with the upgrade in speed.

Re: Odd behaviour/Droppiong connection

I have the same problem as well.
Phoned NTL they blamed my router then zone alarm
Connected direct into modem with no zone alarm still the same.
They say it cant be the modem (120) as its able to handle the new 10 meg
speeds.I never had any problem on 3 meg now its utter crap
NTL seem very reluctant to admit they have a problem with the older modems but from the number of complaints on this and other forums they obiously do.So come on NTL admit it and do something about it instead of fobbing us off.

Re: Odd behaviour/Droppiong connection

Are you suing a router?
If yes does the router have a 10Mb uplink (WAN) port?
Is your NIC set to 10Mb?
Is it set on half-duplex?

If so to any of the above, there's ya problem.

A 10Mb half-duplex port cant cope with the signal.

It took over an hour to TS to work that one out.

Re: Odd behaviour/Droppiong connection

This has been happening to a lot of people, see this thread:

http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/sh...ad.php?t=38743

Oven_Chips has been compiling a list of users that are having the rebooting problems, see below:

Re: Odd behaviour/Droppiong connection

Bambi, no i'm plugging straight into PC, (does this render the other questions null and void because I don't even understand questions 3 +4!!).

Was using USB as I have done for years but since reading some of the posts on here I thought I'd put my network card to use. Still exactly the same via ethernet though.

Seems I've got the same problem as others listed above, sadly NTL seem to be looking the other way, sticking their fingers in their ears and shouting, "La La Laaaaaa!", so they can't hear us. (or saying the problem is at our end, which I suppose technically, it is, damn fools us!)

---------- Post added at 20:53 ---------- Previous post was at 20:49 ----------

By the way, if this is a modem issue, (as it seems to be), would it work if I swapped the modem with a friend who is only on 1mb but has a 250 as he only recently subscribed.

i.e. If the 100 can handle 1mb OK, which we know it can, what's to stop us just swapping the modems and making everyone happy??

Re: Odd behaviour/Droppiong connection

If you are using USB then the 10Mb network port and duplex settings are nothing to bother about..

Not 100% sure but I think your account it linked to the MAC address of your modem. If you can live with no connection for a while, 'drop' your modem and get a new one from NTL.

Re: Odd behaviour/Droppiong connection

Hello all,

This is the first post to the forum so big hello from me.

I'm in Cardiff using a 4 to 5 yr old Terayon Modem and for the last two months I'm being cut off at the flick of a switch. I'm on the 2Mb which is more than adequate but thought I'd check on these forums before crying to ntl.

I've suspected the Modem for a while as when the connection drops I can still share files between the computer.
The router is connecting Ethernet at 100Mbs and high security settings with NAT and ping blocking.
All computers running ZA as firewall and AVG antivirus.
Using SpywareBlaster, Spybot S&D and HijackThis as security against spyware though have just included a rookit checker.

I wasn't aware that >2Mb connections were available and would this new facility be indirectly responsible for these interruptions, I'm not blaming anyone, even ntl. Over subscribing does occur, even if it is unintentional.

Re: Odd behaviour/Droppiong connection

Curiouser and curiouser....(sic?)

I was using 'Panda Platinum' internet security suite and thought i'd pay attention to one of NTL's more outlandish suggestions and uninstall it.

It's been two days now since my last disconnection. Could it be that they have a point when they say firewalls can cause the problem?

Still a bit narked that I can't use the firewall i've been using for ages but if it solves the problem I'll just have to find another, (that works), as I quite rightly don't trust the XP one!

Will keep you updated.

Won't work, modems will have different MAC addresses, if you do not have the MAC address that NTL have logged you with, you won't have any connection at all, plus you won't be able to use tech support.

Thought about changing the brand of firewall you use?

Also as festoid said, you won't be able to use your friend's modem.

Re: Odd behaviour/Dropping connection

Hello all,
I did telephone ntl where it was explained that there was a problem in my area. This is a situation that had been deteriating for two months but perhaps I should have phoned them sooner to let them know I was having a problem.
Email became availabe again today, managed to download the presentation that i had to give yesterday but that's something I had planned for.

Still losing the connection now and again but it is much improved.
I have been using ZA since 1996 and it's very good at letting you know when it's having problems, as well as being the first firewall to block outgoing as well as incoming information.

Thankyou for your feedback as it will be considered in the future.
