Terrible buzzing/humming.

I had ntl: digital TV installed a couple of weeks ago and it seems to be causing a buzzing or humming from my hi-fi, even when the ntl: box is unplugged from the mains supply. If I disconnect the ntl: feed cable from the box, the noise stops.

This didn't happen with the same set-up when on $ky TV.

Am I right to phone ntl: to get it fixed, if so, which department/phone number?

Thanks

Re: Terrible buzzing/humming.

Ring 0800-052-2000 and explain.

The other thing I'd advise you to do is use a proper mains filter, I use the Belkin SurgeMaster superior 188532, it has:
Surge protection
Telephone protection
45,000 Maximum spike amperage protection
6 sockets (bigger versions are available)
Plus, EMI/RFI noise protection, these cut out audio hum sometimes travelling along household mains, from fridges etc, taxis and radio transmitted interference.
Mine came from PC world, but Argos and others do them, but I'd highly recommend you get one as soon as possible.

Re: Terrible buzzing/humming.

If it happens even when the NTL box is unplugged from the mains, it could very will be a dodgy Scart lead. Have you got another one you could try instead?

Re: Terrible buzzing/humming.

Sounds like a dodgy earth on the scart or phono cable.

Re: Terrible buzzing/humming.

This problem is common with cable tv systems.
It's caused by a small current circulating in a mains earth loop between the ntl equipment in the street cabinet and your hi-fi.
That's why you didn't have this problem when you were using a satellite receiver.
Call NTL faults and ask them to fit an earth loop isolator for you to prevent it.
