You could try Whatsapp.
I use the web version for chat.
I've never tried video calls on it.
We use Teams for work, its really not that bad.

Never used Skype. I use Zoom these days for video calls to my sister. Works fine.

I used Skype for chat years ago, not for quite a while now.
I also had a couple of Skype numbers, but dropped one a while back.
Technically the other was still in use, but I was winding it down, so it'll just go sooner.

Used Skype probably over 20 years ago so I can understand it is getting retired.
Whatsapp or Facetime video calls work perfectly for me now so I use those.
