Ofcom agree to relax PSB rules for Radio 4.
Religious, science, arts, consumer, health, education, business, farming and disability programming could be reduced by 90%:

I personally enjoy the consumer programmes and am alarmed that 'In Touch' for the blind and partially sighted could go. AFAIK this is the only programme of its kind.
What do others think?

I guess the problem is that these programmes attract only a minority audience, and if they don't have enough popular programming, people would start to question whether Radio 4 was still relevant for today's audience.
However, there is also Radio 4 Extra, so I see no reason why some minority programmes cannot be transferred to that station.

How many people under the age of 40 listen to Radio 4?
They all have different sources of information.

I only listen to it for the 'Today' programme (occasionally) in the rush hour traffic and the Six o'clock news in the evenings.

I always listen to radio 4 some of the best comedy spawned from radio 4.... little Britain, the mighty boosh (radio show was actually funnier) Mary WhiteHouse experience, goodness gracious me,... the now show is quite funny and there is also some quite funny random comedy, brig society. Kevin Eldon will see you now ,armando iannucci's charm offensive

My husband is a great fan particularly of the comedy shows. Some of which do occasionally find their way onto BBC TV..People have to start somewhere.

Best comedy on R4 is I'm sorry I haven't a clue followed closely by Just a minute.
R4 is PBS at it's best with no ads. It's the "minority" listening done well that makes R4 relevant and such a gem.

Re: Ofcom agree to relax PSB rules for Radio 4.
I always listen to the Today programme while I shave and shower in the morning. It constantly annoys me when the 'thought for the day' is presented by some religious bod, as if they are the only type of person capable of having a worthy thought. Otherwise, on those infrequent occasions when I do listen to Radio 4 it's often quite interesting.

Little Britain, League of Gentleman, Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, Alan Partridge all started on Radio 4. In fact they were more more watered down and not as good when they went onto TV. Some of the the risque drama's you just wouldn't get away with on TV. Its what the makes the BBC unique. Commercial tv and radio would have never have made these programmes. God bless the BBC I say ! Even though the Govt. is intent on destroying it....
