Free video editing software

I've been fiddling around with Movie Maker to try and edit some old family videos. It's very limited and I'm wondering what decent free software is out there which isn't too complicated and I can download from a trustworthy source. There's so much stuff out there I'm never quite sure what sites/software is genuine and what might be damaging so thought it'd be best to ask here.

I'm using a win 8.1 machine with 8gb ram and a 1.5 ghz Celeron processor so not high spec but then again I'm not trying to emulate Hollywood here...

Re: Free video editing software

Convert to AVI and then use Virtualdub. Loads of info out here on how to use it, but it is a steep learning curve.

Moviemaker just crashes all the time for me.

You can go mad in http://www.nonags.com/ , just ignore the advertised software at the top of the page.

Re: Free video editing software

I use Hit Film 4 Express. It's free, pretty powerful, and quite easy to use. Lots of tutorials around on the 'net and you can buy additional "plug-ins" should you need greater functionality. https://hitfilm.com/store/hitfilm-4-express
