Did Virginmedia reduce their upgrade speeds?

Hi,

Some time ago I recall that Virginmedia were stating that we would be receiving a "double speed" upgrade.

Having just received my upgrade (and Superhub 2) I noticed that my XL 100Mb service has been upgraded to XL 150Mb not 200Mb as I was expecting.

My order confirmation e-mail and Speedtest.net test results also confirm that the upgrade is to 150Mb.

Have Virginmedia reduced the speed upgrades or is it more conservative due to over-subscription in my area?

TIA,
Neil Darlow

Re: Did Virginmedia reduce their upgrade speeds?

It was all just rumour, VM never actually said they would be doubling speeds, this was discussed months ago.

It was some of the media that assumed it to be 200.

There is a 200MBit tier, though. The media reports were about a 300Mbit tier (That never happened at the consumer end), so a lot of people assumed it would be 50 -> 100, 100 -> 200 and 150 -> 300. That's what never happened but to my knowledge you are spot on, it was media conjecture.

From memory, this has been the recent speed increases. The "doubling" was actually a few speed increases ago,

10 -> 20 -> 30 -> 50 -> 100

20 -> 30 -> 60 -> 100 -> 150

50/100 -> 120 -> 152 -> 200

Note: 30mbit and above required new equipment, so it was not automatic. The 50/100 to 120Mbit was a tier merge.

The 50Mbit speed has only been upgraded to 70 not 100.
